Skenes takes spotlight on Late Night with Seth Meyers
Paul Skenes knows how to handle a baseball. But a video game controller? That¡¯s not his forte.
Although he is on the cover of MLB The Show 25, Skenes admitted during his guest spot Tuesday night on ¡°Late Night With Seth Meyers¡± that he will probably never play the video game because, well, he¡¯s just not very good at them.
¡°I¡¯m terrible,¡± he said. ¡°I don¡¯t have the finger dexterity to press the right buttons at the right time, so I just don't do it.¡±
¡°I guess, in the end, you and I are the same,¡± Meyers quipped.
Of course, there is no one quite like Skenes. The Pirates¡¯ generational ace whose fastball regularly hits 100 mph on the radar gun had a historic debut season, capped by winning the NL Rookie of the Year Award and being a finalist for the NL Cy Young Award.
He also has that identifiable mustache. Why did he choose to grow the ¡®stache while in college at LSU?
¡°Pretty much just laziness,¡± he joked. ¡°Ran out of razors.¡±
Skenes said he was honored by the ROY win, but when asked to pick which achievement meant more to him, the 22-year-old said that being a Cy finalist ¡°probably hit closest to home for me.¡±
¡°I kind of knew I wasn't going to win,¡± he said. ¡°Didn't have a full season, but just being up there with Chris Sale and Zack Wheeler, two guys that I've watched for a long time now and have been the best in the game for a while, just being up there, kind of in the conversation was pretty cool for me.¡±
Skenes has also been at the center of attention for his baseball card. Specifically, a 1-of-1 Rookie Debut Patch Autograph card that was pulled by an 11-year-old kid last week and will be auctioned off for charity.
Skenes said he was ¡°super excited¡± to find out that the card ended up in the hands of a young fan.
¡°What would have been the worst outcome for you?¡± Meyers asked.
¡°Probably a 50-year-old collector, to be honest,¡± Skenes said.
