Minasian says Halos far from finished adding to roster for '25
DALLAS -- With the Angels coming off a 99-loss season, general manager Perry Minasian hasn¡¯t been shy about saying he¡¯s not focused on improving just one position group but is looking at all possible areas. And while he¡¯s been aggressive early this offseason, he indicated at the Winter Meetings on Monday that he¡¯s far from done adding to the roster.
At the moment, it appears that adding to the bullpen is a priority, and he's also open to adding a third baseman due to Anthony Rendon¡¯s issues with injuries and production over the past four years. Rendon, who is still owed $38.5 million in both ¡¯25 and ¡®26, will come to camp competing for a roster spot and Minasian said he could be moved into more of a utility role where he also sees time at second base and first base.
¡°We have to be open to at least looking at that spot and seeing if there are other alternatives make us better,¡± Minasian said. ¡°Obviously, a healthy Anthony Rendon makes us a lot better. But with the last four years being the last four years, we need to take a look and kind of see what else is out there.¡±
Minasian mentioned Luis Rengifo and new additions Scott Kingery and Kevin Newman as players who can also handle third base. But he wouldn¡¯t rule out adding a full-time third baseman via trade or free agency.
He said it¡¯s a different situation with fellow veteran star Mike Trout, as center field isn¡¯t a huge area of emphasis with Taylor Ward, Jo Adell and Mickey Moniak all able to fill in as needed. They¡¯re still deciding whether Trout will see more time in the corner outfield and at designated hitter, and while Jorge Soler is expected to feature mostly at DH, he'll also see time in the corner-outfield spots. That means that if the Angels do add another bat, it¡¯ll more likely be an infielder.
¡°Is that a position we have to add from the outside? Not necessarily, no,¡± Minasian said. ¡°But is that a position we're still looking at? If we find something that makes sense, we'll look at it.¡±
The bullpen is the most obvious need, as it¡¯s the one area the Angels haven¡¯t addressed this offseason. They signed Yusei Kikuchi and Kyle Hendricks to join the rotation but have yet to sign any relievers. But with the added starting-pitching depth, pitchers such as Chase Silseth and Sam Bachman, who will come to camp in the rotation, could get moved to the bullpen to start the year.
Minasian, though, said there¡¯s a lot of different ways they can go with their bullpen and could even wait until Spring Training to make additional moves. The Angels are comfortable with Ben Joyce as their closer but know that it¡¯s a big step for him and he¡¯s had trouble staying healthy throughout a full season with a heavy workload.
¡°Could we attack the bullpen the rest of the rest of the offseason?¡± Minasian said. ¡°We could get multiple guys but we could wait and do what we did in 2021 when we signed Steve Cishek and Tony Watson at the end of Spring Training. So there's no playbook.¡±
Angels manager Ron Washington, however, has been pleased by the club¡¯s addition this winter -- almost all of whom have postseason experience -- and believes the expectations will be higher for his squad in 2025. He believes the addition of catcher Travis d'Arnaud and catching/pitching coach Sal Fasano, who were with Washington during his time as Atlanta¡¯s third-base coach, will both be huge for the pitching staff and for the development of franchise cornerstone Logan O'Hoppe.
¡°I think when you've been through something for the first time and you weather the storm, expectations go up,¡± Washington said. ¡°But it¡¯s not expectations that¡¯s going to bog them down. It's an expectation that they should envision wanting for themselves, and that's to be successful. But [Minasian] brought in some professional baseball people, not just players, who have experience we didn¡¯t have last year.¡±
But like Minasian, Washington said there¡¯s not just one area they need to focus on improving heading into ¡¯25.
¡°There's needs in every area, and we're discussing every area,¡± Washington said. ¡°We¡¯re just going to keep adding to our club in a way that we think can help us be a better team in ¡®25 than we were in ¡®24.¡±
