Athletics agree to terms with DH/OF Brent Rooker on five-year contract extension
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. ¡ª The Athletics have agreed to terms with designated hitter/outfielder Brent Rooker on a five-year contract through the 2029 season, with a club option for 2030.
Rooker, 30, batted .293 with 39 home runs and 112 RBI in 145 games for the A¡¯s in 2024. Among American League hitters, Rooker ranked third in RBI, fourth in home runs, fifth in slugging percentage (.562), sixth in OPS (.927), and seventh in batting average and on-base percentage (.365). Rooker became the first A¡¯s player to be in the AL top-10 in all three Triple Crown categories since Miguel Tejada in 2002. His 34 home runs as a designated hitter rank sixth in A¡¯s history and his 99 RBI at the position rank fifth. He was named a 2024 Louisville Silver Slugger award winner, the first A¡¯s player to win the award since third baseman Eric Chavez in 2002 and the first Athletic to win it as a designated hitter.
Rooker was selected as an American League All-Star in 2023 and became the first A¡¯s designated hitter to be represented at the All-Star Game. He was the first Athletics outfielder to be selected to the All-Star Game since Yoenis C¨¦spedes in 2014. He finished the 2023 season with a .246 batting average, 30 home runs, 20 doubles, 61 runs scored, and 69 RBI in 137 games.
In two seasons with the A¡¯s, Rooker has hit .272 with 69 home runs, 46 doubles, 181 RBI, 143 runs scored, and an .876 OPS. He is the first A¡¯s player with consecutive 30-homer seasons since Khris Davis in 2016, 2017, and 2018. Rooker is just one of 14 players in franchise history with multiple 30-home run seasons.
