Mets sign RHP Ryne Stanek
FLUSHING, N.Y., January 30, 2025 ¨C The New York Mets today announced that the club has signed RHP Ryne Stanek to a one-year contract. In a corresponding move, RHP Dylan Covey has been designated for assignment.
In 63 games last season between the Seattle Mariners and Mets, Stanek posted a 7-3 mark with seven saves, a 4.88 ERA (30 ER/55.1 IP), 25 walks and 67 strikeouts. His seven wins and seven saves were both career highs. The right-handed pitcher was acquired at the trade deadline from the Mariners in exchange for minor league outfielder Rhylan Thomas. Stanek appeared in 17 games for the Mets and recorded 23 strikeouts in 16.1 innings.
Stanek was tied for 12th in the majors with seven relief wins and he was one of 11 pitchers in the majors with seven or more wins and seven or more saves in 2024.
¡°Ryne emerged as an important late inning option for us last season and we¡¯re excited to bring him back,¡± said President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. ¡°He brings a combination of experience and stuff that will complement the rest of our pen well.¡±
The 33-year-old has appeared in 401 career games across eight major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, Miami Marlins, Houston Astros, Mariners and Mets. He has posted a 17-17 record with 11 saves, a 3.65 ERA (163 ER/402.1 IP), 200 walks and 473 strikeouts.
Stanek has appeared in 30 career Postseason games, going 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA (9 ER/28.0 IP) with nine walks and 29 strikeouts.
The St. Louis, MO native was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the first round (29th overall) in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft out of the University of Arkansas.
