The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired outfielder Alexander Canario (pronounced "cah-NAR-ee-oh") from the New York Mets in exchange for cash considerations.
The 24-year-old Canario was previously acquired by New York from Chicago (NL) on February 25. He hit .306 (11-for-36) with nine runs, two doubles, three homers and eight RBI over 17 spring games with the Mets.
The native of Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, played in a combined 21 games for the Cubs from 2023-24, batting .286 (12-for-42) with five extra-base hits and eight RBI.
In his second Major League game (first start), which came against the Pirates on September 19, 2023, at Wrigley Field, Canario became the first player in Major League history to hit a grand slam and record five-plus RBI in his first Major League start.
Right-handed pitcher Jared Jones has been transferred from the 15- to 60-day injured list to make room for Canario on the 40-man roster.
