SACRAMENTO ¨C Prior to today¡¯s game at the Athletics, the Chicago White Sox acquired infielder Gage Workman from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for cash considerations and designated infielder Nick Maton for assignment.
Workman, 25, was designated for assignment on April 23 by the Cubs after making his major-league debut on March 29 at Arizona. He has appeared in nine games this season, hitting .214 (3-14) with one double and two RBI. Workman was selected by the Cubs from Detroit in the Rule 5 Draft on December 11, 2024. He will wear uniform No. 41.
Workman, 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, batted .280/.366/.476 (135-485) with 29 doubles, six triples, 18 home runs and 89 RBI over 126 games with Class AA Erie last season. He helped guide Erie to its second straight Eastern League Championship and was named an EL Postseason All-Star in 2024.
The left-handed hitting Workman is a career .248/.326/.435 hitter with 111 doubles, 24 triples, 57 homers, 263 RBI and 110 stolen bases in 472 games over four minor-league seasons in the Tigers organization (2021-24). He originally was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2020 First-Year Player Draft.
Maton, 28, appeared in 23 games with the White Sox this season, batting .173 (9-52) with two doubles, two home runs and four RBI.
With the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster remains at 40.
