ARLINGTON -- The Rangers entered the offseason desperately needing to add arms in the bullpen.
After all, they lost four relievers -- lefty Andrew Chafin (19 1/3 innings) and righties Kirby Yates (61 2/3 innings), David Robertson (72 innings) and Jos¨¦ Leclerc (66 2/3 innings) -- and swingman righty Jos¨¦ Ure?a (109 innings) to free agency this winter. Texas will also be without right-handed reliever Josh Sborz for at least the first two months of the 2025 season after he underwent right shoulder surgery on Nov. 13.
The need was obvious. And they¡¯ve mostly accomplished that goal.
After announcing the signing of Chris Martin on Monday, Texas has now added six relievers to the big league roster to fill those innings, including: Hoby Milner (free agency), Luis Curvelo (free agency), Robert Garcia (via trade), Jacob Webb (free agency) and Shawn Armstrong (free agency).
What¡¯s next for the Rangers¡¯ productive offseason, which has also included re-signing Nathan Eovaldi, trading for Jake Burger and signing Joc Pederson?
¡°I think you can never have enough pitching, that's been stated many times before, but I think we feel like we've done the bulk of our lifting at this point,¡± said general manager Ross Fenstermaker. ¡°But we're always going to look for ways in which we can upgrade the club further. We're going to continue to be open minded and creative, but we feel like we've done a lot of heavy lifting so far, and we put this team in a good spot and built all the ¡®pen quite well. We're looking forward to seeing these guys get into 2025.¡±
But there¡¯s still potentially one small hole.
The Rangers have done a good job of filling in the relief innings lost to free agency, but Yates handled the bulk of the closer duties in 2024, posting a 1.17 ERA and 33 saves in 34 opportunities. That is hard to replace.
Fenstermaker said it would be more of a question for manager Bruce Bochy in regards to who would close games with the roster as is, but he noted that Martin, as well as other internal options, will be in the closer competition going into camp.
¡°I don't think [a closer is] a specific need right now, per se,¡± Fenstermaker said. ¡°I think it's something that we're going to entertain if those opportunities present themselves. But we do feel we have multiple relievers right now in the ¡®pen that are capable of closing. We'll let that sort itself out. I wouldn't say that we are actively looking for any specific role at this point, more just adding quality to the 'pen, if possible.¡±
Both Yates and Robertson are still available in free agency. Tanner Scott (1.75 ERA in 2024) and Jeff Hoffman (2.17 ERA in 2024) are still out there. There are options if the Rangers would like to add another high-leverage arm, whether that¡¯s a closer specifically or a setup man.
Whatever happens the rest of the winter, the Rangers' front office is happy with how they¡¯ve positions the roster going into Spring Training at this point.
¡°I think we feel good about the moves that we've made and where we've positioned this club, especially adding that group of players back to what we believe are a hungry group that are ready to compete for a championship and have won a championship in the past,¡± Fenstermaker said. ¡°It's a great core. We were able to satisfy several of our needs that we outlined at the start of the offseason. We're never finished, and we're going to continue to explore every option to upgrade the club further, but we feel pretty good with where the club's at right now, and we're excited to get going.¡±
