Here's the Red Sox's Spring Breakout roster
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony and Kyle Teel are the big three of the Red Sox¡¯s farm system and they are ranked in that order in MLB Pipeline¡¯s preseason team Top 30 prospects.
Already, the trio has developed a close bond, one in which they push each other in their shared pursuit of earning a ticket to Fenway Park to play for the Red Sox.
On March 16, as part of MLB¡¯s inaugural Spring Breakout event, the much-touted trio will have a chance to suit up together in a home game on the main diamond of JetBlue Park against the top prospects of the Atlanta Braves.
Playing on a field that has replica dimensions of Fenway Park, Mayer, Anthony and Teel will be able to visualize their futures.
In this showcase event, Mayer will get a chance to demonstrate he is healthy again after his performance was impacted and his playing time was reduced last season by a left shoulder impingement.
¡°Marcelo is great,¡± said Red Sox director of player development Brian Abraham. ¡°He¡¯s doing well and working hard and we¡¯re excited for a healthy year.¡±
Anthony, the 19-year-old center fielder who has roared through the farm system since he was selected out of high school in the 2022 Draft, will get a chance to show off his expansive array of skills.
Then there is Teel, the catcher with an impressive combination of offense and defense who could become Boston¡¯s best catcher since Jason Varitek if his career pans out as some scouts project.
Look for Mayer, Teel and Anthony to be in the same lineup at Double-A Portland when the Minor League season starts.
But their chance to play on a bigger stage on March 16 is one that excites them.
¡°It should be fun,¡± said Anthony. ¡°It should be really fun. Any time we get to take the field together, it¡¯s a fun time. We try to take the most of it. We¡¯re looking forward to it. Luckily we¡¯re home so we get to play right here in this stadium and in front of these fans. That¡¯s always a blessing. It¡¯s exciting. It¡¯s going to be a fun day.¡±
Over the winter, it was interesting to hear chief baseball officer Craig Breslow mention all three players when he cited the team¡¯s bright future. While there are no guarantees with any prospects, the Red Sox aren¡¯t hesitant to brag about these players.
While this could be perceived as pressure to some players, this trio views it as excitement.
¡°I love it,¡± said Mayer. ¡°Roman, Teel, they're great players. They love to play, they play hard. We all hold each other accountable. I'm really excited to see what our team is going to look like this year.¡±
