How can I tune in?
Which position players are expected to play?
It will be a first look before a wider audience for power-hitting outfielder/third baseman Charlie Condon, the third overall pick in the 2024 MLB Draft and MLB Pipeline¡¯s No. 29 overall prospect. Other players who may turn heads are outfielders. Robert Calaz (Rockies No. 4 prospect), 19, batted a combined .344 with 12 home runs and 56 RBIs in 62 games in the Arizona Complex League and at Single-A Fresno. Outfielder Jared Thomas (Rockies No. 12), selected out of the University of Texas in the second round in 2024, hit .333 with two home runs in an eight-game appearance in Fresno.
Seven Spring Breakout position players are in Major League camp: outfielder Cole Carrigg (Rockies No. 3), second baseman Adael Amador (No. 7), catcher Drew Romo (No. 11), middle infielder Ryan Ritter (No. 13), outfielder Benny Montgomery (No. 15), outfielder Sterlin Thompson (No. 17) and third baseman Kyle Karros (No. 21).
Which pitching prospects are expected to play?
No. 1 Rockies and No. 25 overall prospect Chase Dollander and right-hander Gabriel Hughes (Rockies No. 16) have grabbed early headlines and been impressive in games already in Major League camp. Dollander and right-handed relievers Jaden Hill (No. 19) and Zach Agnos (No. 28) are getting long looks in the Rockies¡¯ bullpen. Righty Bradley Blalock (No. 25) has pitched well enough in camp to be considered for the starting rotation or long relief. Lefty Carson Palmquist (No. 9) also could pitch his way into Major League consideration.
Topping the list of pitchers who haven¡¯t been seen in Major League camp is one who has not been seen at all. Righty Brody Brecht (No. 5), taken out of the University of Iowa 38th overall last year, has not pitched in a regular-season professional game, but he participated in instructional ball last season and is in Minor League camp building for his first pro season.
Why are certain top prospects not listed on the roster?
Right-hander Seth Halvorsen (No. 18) pitched well enough in a Major League trial at the end of last season that he is being eyed for the Rockies¡¯ closer role. Lefty Luis Peralta (No. 26) was impressive enough in the Majors at the end of last season, after arriving in a trade with the Pirates, that he¡¯s a prime candidate for the season-opening bullpen. Outfielders Yanquiel Fernandez (No. 6) and Zac Veen (No. 8) also are competing for Major League jobs.
Lefty starting pitcher Sean Sullivan (No. 10) was invited to Major League camp but is on a slower schedule because of a right hip surgery he underwent at the end of last season, and is throwing in Minor League camp. Righty Yujanyer Herrera (No. 20), acquired from the Brewers at last year¡¯s Deadline, sustained a right elbow injury and underwent Tommy John surgery at the end of the season that will cost him all of 2025.
How does the Rockies¡¯ use of Top 30 prospects compare to that of other teams?
Awarding 30 points for a team¡¯s No. 1 prospect, 29 for No. 2, down to one point for the No. 30 prospect, here¡¯s which teams are sending their best:
- Marlins (436)
- Royals (433)
- White Sox (377)
