Giants out of running for Sasaki after in-person meeting
On the same day they introduced likely future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander, the Giants revealed that they¡¯re out of the running for another frontline starter.
General manager Zack Minasian confirmed that the Giants met with Japanese ace Roki Sasaki but said the club had recently been informed that the 23-year-old right-hander would not be signing with San Francisco.
"We met with Roki in person, and as of now we were recently told that we would not be his destination," Minasian said during a Zoom call with reporters on Monday.
Sasaki, who is ranked the No. 1 international prospect by MLB Pipeline, will be eligible to sign as soon as the 2025 signing period opens on Wednesday and is expected to make a decision before his posting window closes on Jan. 23.
Sasaki is also believed to have met with the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Padres, Cubs, Rangers and Blue Jays, though both New York clubs are reportedly out of the running as well. The rival Dodgers have long been viewed as the frontrunners for Sasaki, though the Padres were voted the second-most likely landing spot in MLB Pipeline¡¯s recent Executive Poll.
After missing out on Sasaki and Corbin Burnes, the Giants are unlikely to add any other impact arms to their rotation this offseason. The starting staff will once again be anchored by Logan Webb, who will lead a group that now includes Verlander, Robbie Ray, Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, Hayden Birdsong and Landen Roupp.
