Rangers fall short in pursuit of Sasaki (sources)
ARLINGTON -- The Roki Sasaki sweepstakes are coming to an end soon, and the Rangers will not be the final team standing.
According to club sources, the Rangers were informed on Monday that they are not likely to land the Japanese phenom, ending Texas¡¯ pursuit of additional depth atop the rotation. The Rangers felt they put their best foot forward in pursuing Sasaki, but he ultimately decided to take his talents elsewhere.
The Rangers had an in-person meeting with Sasaki in Los Angeles before the holidays, at which they made a presentation. He did not visit with the club when he returned to the United States last week. Texas will shift their focus to their international signing class in Latin America.
Sasaki is expected to sign after the 2025 international signing period opens on Wednesday and before his posting window closes on Jan. 23.
Sasaki has reportedly met with the Giants, Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Padres, Cubs, Rangers and Blue Jays, but San Francisco and both New York teams have been informed they are out of the running as well, according to reports.
The Rangers are still in a good place regarding starting pitching depth, even after missing out on Sasaki. The rotation is headed by ace Jacob deGrom, followed by Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Tyler Mahle, Cody Bradford, Kumar Rocker and Jack Leiter.
