Boston's 'Big 3' prospects headline '25 spring invitees
The next wave of young Red Sox stars is about to arrive all at once, and you¡¯ll get a sneak peak of the future this spring with Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer all invited to Major League Spring Training, the club announced on Tuesday.
Boston¡¯s top three prospects headlined a group of nine invitees, which also includes the recently signed Abraham Toro, catchers Nathan Hickey and Mark Kolozsvary; and pitchers Jovani Mor¨¢n, Brian Van Belle and Jacob Webb.
All eyes will be on Anthony, Campbell and Mayer, though, who are starting to generate another round of buzz in the new year as they land near the top of prospect lists around the game. Anthony ranked as MLB Pipeline¡¯s best prospect not named Roki Sasaki in the latest Top 100 update, and all three landed in the overall top 12.
It¡¯s an impressive look for the Red Sox and their farm system, which is still in excellent shape after Boston made a major move to land starter Garrett Crochet from the White Sox in December. That trade cost the Red Sox a package that included Kyle Teel and outfielder Braden Montgomery, who are ranked No. 32 and No. 55, respectively, in the new Top 100.
Anthony, Campbell and Mayer have all put themselves in position to help the Red Sox this season, but positional fit will be a factor early in the year. Anthony ranks as the best of the bunch, but the Red Sox are expected to open 2025 with an outfield of Jarren Duran in left, Ceddanne Rafaela in center and Wilyer Abreu in right. It¡¯s a great problem to have, and Anthony won¡¯t turn 21 until May 13.
It¡¯s possible that Campbell, at 22, could beat Anthony to the big leagues in 2025, with his ability to play multiple positions leaving plenty of potential avenues. Across three levels last season, ending in Triple-A, Anthony played shortstop, second base and center field, even mixing in a handful of games at third. On top of his right-handed bat, which the Red Sox could use, this versatility has set Campbell up well for the next level, and he¡¯s looking like one of Boston¡¯s best development stories in years as a compensatory fourth-round pick in the ¡®23 Draft.
Rounding out the group is Mayer, who would be the No. 1 prospect in well over half the farm systems in the league given that he¡¯s ranked 12th in the game. Mayer¡¯s path to becoming a top prospect has been more traditional than Campbell¡¯s, given that Mayer was the No. 4 overall pick in 2021 and has hovered around this range on MLB Pipeline¡¯s Top 100 list ever since. Injuries have slowed Mayer at times, including an early end to each of his last two campaigns, and he has yet to play more than 91 games in a season. Mayer is expected to open the season in Triple-A, where he¡¯ll see his first game action at that level, but like Anthony and Campbell, he¡¯s right on the big league doorstep.
The Red Sox open their Spring Training game schedule on Feb. 21 with an exhibition against the Northeastern University Huskies at JetBlue Park, then they hit the road to face the Rays the next day.
