Royals cut Goodwin to make room for Duda
KANSAS CITY -- The Royals on Monday requested release waivers on outfielder Brian Goodwin, and also selected the contract of first baseman/designated hitter Lucas Duda.
Goodwin, who is out of options, came into camp presumably with the right fielder¡¯s job. But Goodwin, 28, was just 5-of-43 (.116) in the Cactus League.
Goodwin cleared out his locker on Saturday morning, but the club didn¡¯t make his release official until Monday. He was not designated for assignment then because technically, the Royals weren¡¯t at their full 40-man roster.
Goodwin was acquired last July in a deal with Washington for Minor League right-hander Jacob Condra-Bogan.
Duda, 33, was signed as a free agent prior to 2018 and played in 87 games with the Royals last season, hitting .242 with 13 home runs and 48 RBIs. He finished the season with the Braves and was in Twins camp this spring before rejoining Kansas City on a Minor League deal on Thursday.
Duda likely will be a candidate to DH and possibly spell Ryan O¡¯Hearn at first base, at least in the early going.
According to a source, Duda¡¯s deal will be for a $1.25 million base with $250,000 in performance bonuses.
The Royals will carry only 12 pitchers to start the season because of three off-days in the first week. By mid-April, they likely will add a pitcher and will have to cut one position player. Right now, the Royals¡¯ bench would consist of Duda, backup catcher Cam Gallagher, super-utility infielder Chris Owings and backup outfielder Terrance Gore.
