Cubs trade for Brasier from Dodgers to bolster bullpen
The Cubs acquired right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier and cash from the Dodgers in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations, the clubs announced on Tuesday night. To make room on the 40-man roster, Chicago designated left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny for assignment.
Brasier, 37, was designated for assignment last week when the Dodgers signed Kirby Yates, but Brasier has been a productive arm when healthy in recent years. In June 2023, he joined the Dodgers after being released by the Red Sox and posted a 0.70 ERA with 38 strikeouts over 38 2/3 innings with Los Angeles.
Brasier wasnĄ¯t quite as sharp last season, pitching to a 3.54 ERA across 28 innings. He also missed more than three months due to a right calf strain. But he recorded a career-low 4.5% walk rate, and his 34.8% chase rate was well above the league average (28.5%).
A sixth-round Draft pick by the Angels in 2007, Brasier owns a 3.85 ERA through 285 1/3 career innings. He has extensive playoff experience from his six years with the Red Sox, where he won two World Series.
Now entering his ninth MLB season, Brasier is the latest notable addition to the CubsĄ¯ rebuilt bullpen, which includes free-agent pickup Caleb Thielbar and trade acquisitions Eli Morgan and Ryan Pressly.
