Ward, 4 others agree to 2025 contracts with Angels
Moniak, Rengifo, Quijada remain unsigned, could head to salary arbitration hearings
The Angels avoided arbitration hearings with five players ahead of Thursday¡¯s deadline to exchange salary figures for the upcoming season, while three others will likely head to a hearing.
The Angels agreed to terms on the following one-year deals to avoid arbitration:
- Taylor Ward: $7.825 million
- Jo Adell: $2.1 million
- Reid Detmers: $1.825 million
- Brock Burke: $1.15 million
- José Suarez: $1.1 million
Mickey Moniak, Luis Rengifo and Jos¨¦ Quijada are the three arbitration-eligible players who did not reach agreements and remain unsigned. The Angels will now likely exchange figures with the three players in preparation for a salary arbitration hearing.
Ward, 31, earned $4.8 million last season. The left fielder mashed a career-high 25 home runs in 2024 and finished with a .749 OPS over a career-high 156 games with the Halos. He overcame a slow start by putting together a strong second half, slashing .272/.338/.461 over his final 63 games while batting primarily in the leadoff role.
Adell showed some promise in what was his first full season as the starting right fielder for the Angels after years of lofty expectations as one of the top prospects in baseball. The 25-year-old showed marked improvement after making a mechanical adjustment at the plate to remove his leg kick. Before the change, Adell hit .192/.265/.384 with 15 homers and 46 RBIs in 96 games. After making the change in July, Adell slashed .248/.320/.451 with five homers and 16 RBIs in 34 games, while also cutting down his strikeout rate from 29 percent to 25 percent.
Detmers, 25, flashed his electric stuff with a 12-strikeout performance in his final start of what was an up-and-down 2024 campaign. He finished the year going 4-9 with a 6.70 ERA in 17 outings with 109 strikeouts and 38 walks in 87 1/3 innings. The No. 10 overall pick of the 2020 MLB Draft is expected to be a key part of the Angels rotation in '25.
The 28-year-old Burke joined the Angels in August as a waiver claim from the Rangers and performed well out of the bullpen with a 3.54 ERA across 20 1/3 innings. That solid showing to end the season likely earned him a spot in the Halos bullpen for '25 as one of the top lefty options.
Suarez, 27, posted a 6.02 ERA last season, though his quality stuff flashed a lot better down the stretch as a long reliever, and the left-hander is a candidate to fill that role again next season.
