MILWAUKEE -- Manager Terry Francona was ruled out from being in the dugout for Friday¡¯s game against the Brewers because of an illness.
Francona was among multiple Reds players and staff that were sent back to the team hotel after feeling sick. Bench coach Freddie Benavides will manage against Milwaukee.
¡°We¡¯re not really sure what the sickness is so we sent some staff members to the hotel, some players as well. Hopefully they¡¯re going to be better tomorrow," president of baseball operations Nick Krall said.
Krall noted that the club had also had yet to determine the source of whatever the illness was.
Although Krall declined to name which players Cincinnati would not have available for the game in order to maintain competitive advantage, it appeared that all of the club's position players were on the field for pregame work.
¡°There are still guys in there that are feeling part of it. We¡¯ll just go with whatever guys that are available and see what we can do," Benavides said.
All of the Reds' regular players, except for catcher Jose Trevino, were in the starting lineup with backup Austin Wynns catching instead. However, Trevino was healthy and spoke with reporters in the dugout before the game.
First base coach Collin Cowgill was not available for the game and was replaced by coach Mike Napoli.
The Reds¡¯ clubhouse was closed to the media as a precaution. The team is entering the night on a three-game losing streak -- all by a 1-0 score -- and has been held scoreless for its last 28 innings.
