Monday's Blue Jays-Tigers game canceled due to rain
LAKELAND, Fla. ¡ª The Tigers made a bunch of upgrades to their Spring Training facility to help players get their work in during bad weather, but they still haven¡¯t found a way to completely beat Mother Nature. Monday¡¯s Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays at Joker Marchant Stadium was canceled due to inclement weather.
It¡¯s the Tigers¡¯ first weather postponement in Spring Training since 2016, when their Grapefruit League finale at Disney¡¯s Wide World of Sports complex was rained out ahead of their trip to Miami for Opening Day against the Marlins.
With rain in Lakeland¡¯s forecast all day Monday, the fate of the game wasn¡¯t in much doubt. The Tigers never posted a starting lineup and never got players onto the stadium field for workouts. Instead, they used the covered turf infield on the other side of the complex for morning drills, while players hit in the indoor batting cages. The fixed roof over the turf field was part of the Tigers¡¯ multi-million-dollar renovation for the facility this winter.
¡°Thank you, C.I.,¡± manager A.J. Hinch said, giving a nod to the Tigers¡¯ chairman and CEO, Chris Ilitch, who was behind the project.
The only players left out in the elements were pitchers who had to long toss in the rain on the back fields.
The Tigers could have used the covered field to let Monday¡¯s scheduled pitchers get their work in, but they¡¯ll let scheduled starter Keider Montero get game work instead. The rotation candidate will pitch in relief on Tuesday against the Orioles in Sarasota, Fla. Fellow rotation candidate Jackson Jobe will remain the scheduled starter.
In addition, outfielders Riley Greene and Kerry Carpenter ¨C who were scheduled to make their spring debuts on Monday ¨C will make the trip and start Tuesday. Gleyber Torres, who was also scheduled to start Monday, will stay back for infield work before making his Tigers debut on Wednesday against the Twins at Joker Marchant Stadium.
¡°We¡¯ll get extra time with him, which he wanted to do anyways,¡± Hinch said.
