DETROIT -- The Orioles and Tigers will have to wait a day to begin their highly anticipated clash. Friday¡¯s series opener has been postponed due to storms passing through Michigan.
The game will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Saturday. The originally scheduled 1:10 p.m. ET game will take place on time, followed by Game 2 at 6:10.
Casey Mize, who was scheduled to start Friday¡¯s series opener, will start Game 1 on Saturday. The Tigers have not announced a starter for Game 2. Jackson Jobe, who was originally scheduled to start Saturday, will be pushed back to next week as the Tigers keep an eye on his innings workload for the season.
¡°It just changes his workload program,¡± manager A.J. Hinch said. ¡°He¡¯s going to throw a heavy bullpen [session] and get himself as much work as can be. The de-load isn¡¯t a problem, as long as we build the work around it to prepare for his next start, which we will. But this is probably coming at a good time for him.¡±
Tarik Skubal remains on schedule to start Sunday¡¯s series finale.
For the Orioles, Brandon Young (Baltimore's No. 19 prospect, Friday's scheduled starter) will make the start in Game 1. Charlie Morton will get the start in Game 2.
Young will make his second MLB start in the day¡¯s first game after giving up three runs on seven hits over four innings in his first start. He struck out three, but walked three against the Reds in Baltimore.
Morton, a veteran with plenty of success in his career, has struggled out of the gate with five homers and 15 walks allowed in 20 2/3 innings. He will face one of the hottest offenses in baseball -- which also happens to have matchup problems waiting in left-handed hitters Kerry Carpenter, Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry.
Both teams will have the option of an extra player for the doubleheader. The Tigers could use that to call up a spot starter such as Keider Montero, who made two starts as a sixth starter before being optioned to Triple-A Toledo after his last outing Monday. Or they could call up an extra reliever and revive their pitching chaos strategy for a bullpen game, taking advantage of two days off for their relievers.
Tickets for Friday¡¯s game are good for Game 2, with no exchange needed. Fans who wish to exchange their tickets for another game during this season will have options communicated to them through the Tigers. Fans who bought tickets for Friday through a secondary market vendor should contact the vendor directly.
