Pham heading to Pittsburgh on 1-year deal (source)
The Pirates¡¯ offseason-long search for a corner outfielder has led them to Tommy Pham, agreeing to a one-year, $4.025 million contract with the veteran, sources told MLB.com on Thursday. The club has not confirmed the deal.
Pham, who turns 37 next month, slashed .248/.305/.368 with nine home runs and 39 RBIs last season. An 11-year Major League veteran, Pham signed a Minor League deal with the White Sox in mid-April last year, and split time between the White Sox, Cardinals and Royals. That type of globetrotting has become the norm for Pham in recent seasons, playing for seven teams over the past three years.
While Pham¡¯s overall numbers were below average last season, his peripherals were mostly solid. His .319 xwOBA was right in line with an average Major League hitter, and he still has bat speed (72.7 mph) and a solid batting eye (chasing just 18.7% of pitches out of the zone, putting him in the 97th percentile of players).
Defensively, Pham graded poorly last season, being worth -2 Outs Above Average and -10 defensive runs saved, but he was able to show that he could still play all three outfield positions. It¡¯s a useful skill to have, though he was worth -7 defensive runs saved in 223 innings in center field last season, suggesting he should probably stick to the corners at this stage of his career. That¡¯s fine for the Pirates, whose biggest need is in the corner outfield.
While the Pirates are set with Bryan Reynolds and Oneil Cruz in the outfield, another corner outfielder has been a need all offseason after the team opted to non-tender Bryan De La Cruz and Connor Joe in November. The position in general needed help, as their .614 OPS, 11 home runs and .319 slugging percentage from right fielders last season ranked 29th among all teams (ahead of only the White Sox).
Pham projects to be a primary outfielder for this club, but the Pirates do have other options on the 40-man roster. Jack Suwinski and Joshua Palacios showed upside in 2023 before suffering setbacks in '24, though there is always the chance of a bounceback. Nick Yorke and Billy Cook were acquired at the Trade Deadline, and while Cook is the more natural outfielder of the two, they could also play some right field this season. It stands to reason Pham could theoretically move into a platoon or reserve role midseason if someone else in that group emerges. If nobody does, Pham has shown he can still be an everyday player, playing in 116 games last season despite not being on a Major League roster until April 26.
Pham is the fifth player the Pirates have signed to a guaranteed Major League contract this winter, with three coming in the last week and a half. Andrew McCutchen re-signed in December, followed by left-hander Caleb Ferguson in January. Infielder Adam Frazier and lefty reliever Tim Mayza both had their contracts finalized within the past nine days.
The Pirates will need to make a corresponding roster move once the deal is finalized.
