Cubs add Wick to 'pen, place Cedeno on IL
Strop throws successful bullpen session
CHICAGO -- The Cubs placed left-handed pitcher Xavier Cedeño on the 10-day injured list with left wrist inflammation before Wednesday's game against the Phillies, and they recalled right-handed pitcher Rowan Wick from Triple-A Iowa. Wick will be available for the Cubs against Philadelphia.
Cedeno, 32, began the season on the injured list with the same ailment and was activated on May 11. He pitched two scoreless innings over five games, allowing four hits and three walks.
¡°Cedeno¡¯s still not 100 percent right, so we made that move," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. "Wick¡¯s up and he¡¯s been pitching really well. We liked him in Spring Training. He provides length if we need it, also.¡±
Wick, 26, has a 2.84 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 13 relief outings with Iowa this year with 25 strikeouts over 19 innings. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder made his Major League debut last season with the Padres and had a 6.48 ERA (six earned runs in 8 1/3 innings) over 10 appearances. With Triple-A El Paso last season, he went 2-0 with nine saves and a 1.99 ERA in 20 appearances. Wick was acquired by the Cubs from San Diego on Nov. 20, 2018, for infielder Jason Vosler.
Wick was converted to a pitcher in 2015 and has a 2.84 ERA and 27 saves in 143 Minor League relief appearances over the past five seasons.
Worth noting
Cubs closer Pedro Strop (strained left hamstring) threw 25 pitches in a bullpen session on Wednesday. The right-hander is scheduled to throw again this coming weekend.
¡°He¡¯s doing good,¡± Maddon said.
Strop has been on the injured list since May 7, and the team has not decided whether he will go on a rehab assignment before being activated.
