Jan. 23: Claimed RHP Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Orioles; claimed RHP Allan Winans off waivers from the Braves
Contreras, 25, returns to the Yankees organization after beginning his professional career with the club as a non-drafted free agent in July 2016.
Part of a January 2021 trade with the Pirates for right-hander Jameson Taillon, Contreras has posted a 10-16 record with three saves and a 4.72 ERA over 90 Major League appearances (33 starts) with Pittsburgh (2021-24) and the Angels. In 2024, Contreras was 2-4 with two saves and a 4.35 ERA in 49 combined appearances (three starts) for the Pirates and Angels.
Winans, 29, has posted a 1-4 record and 7.20 ERA in eight starts with the Braves from 2023-24, including two starts during the ¡¯24 season. He spent most of last year with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he was named the International League¡¯s Pitcher of the Month for June, when he logged a 1.16 ERA in five starts.
Jan. 15: Acquired right-hander Michael Arias from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations
Arias, 23, combined to go 6-2 with five saves and a 4.77 ERA in 49 relief appearances for Double-A Tennessee (16 games) and Triple-A Iowa (33) in 2024. He was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Jan. 12.
Over four Minor League seasons in the Cubs' organization, Arias has gone 11-17 with eight saves and a 4.25 ERA in 97 games (32 starts).
Jan. 9: Agreed to one-year contracts with IF Jazz Chisholm Jr., RHP Scott Effross, RHP Clarke Schmidt and RHP Devin Williams
The Yanks reached agreements with four of their five arbitration-eligible players, leaving only right-hander Mark Leiter Jr.. still headed for a potential hearing this spring. Chisholm agreed at $5.85 million, Effross at $800,000, Schmidt at $3.6 million and Williams at $8.6 million, sources told MLB.com.
INJURY UPDATES
RHP JT Brubaker (recovery from Tommy John surgery, oblique strain)
Expected return: 2025
Brubaker made three September appearances with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, marking a return to the mound after he sustained an oblique injury while making a fielding play during a July 11 Minor League rehab start for the RailRiders. The injury interrupted Brubaker¡¯s recovery from Tommy John surgery performed on April 12, 2023. He was acquired from the Pirates on March 29. (Last updated: Oct. 4)
OF Everson Pereira (right UCL tear; No. 10 on the Yankees' top prospects list)
Expected return: 2025
Pereira underwent reconstructive Tommy John surgery with an internal brace in early June, manager Aaron Boone said on June 14. Pereira had been playing through the injury at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, last appearing for the RailRiders on May 14. Boone said Pereira¡¯s injury was ¡°unfortunate,¡± but that similar to Jasson Domínguez, it is one the organization expects him to bounce back from. ¡°This isn¡¯t something that¡¯s going to hurt his career too much," Boone said.
