Aaron Boone¡¯s plans for the upcoming spring are becoming more clear, with the Yankees' manager saying this week that if there are no further additions, he would likely play Cody Bellinger in center field, Jasson Domínguez in left field and Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base.
Boone revealed his intentions during an in-studio appearance with WFAN¡¯s Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata on Tuesday, noting that Bellinger¡¯s versatility plays into the outfield decision.
¡°I feel good about moving Bellinger wherever,¡± Boone said. ¡°I¡¯d ideally not like to move Dom¨ªnguez as much. So on a day where [Giancarlo Stanton] is out and [Aaron] Judge is going to DH, I can move Bellinger over [to right field], throw [Trent Grisham] in center and keep Dom¨ªnguez in left.¡±
Bellinger has proven capable at all three outfield positions, tallying 22 Defensive Runs Saved and 25 Outs Above Average over 4,015 Major League innings as a center fielder dating to 2017.
However, that didn¡¯t hold true last season with the Cubs, when Bellinger registered -1 DRS and 0 OAA in 403 2/3 center field innings (0 DRS and -1 OAA in 794 innings as an outfielder overall).
But the Yankees¡¯ greater concern is with helping Dom¨ªnguez reach his potential. Boone said that the Yankees plan to use the Grapefruit League schedule to ¡°try to get Dom¨ªnguez up to speed¡± in left field, where he looked shaky in a September cameo that ultimately led to the team starting Alex Verdugo in each postseason game.
At the time, Verdugo¡¯s more reliable defense outweighed Dom¨ªnguez¡¯s offensive potential, but the Yankees believe a full spring of preparation will allow the 21-year-old top prospect to handle the position change. Last season, Dom¨ªnguez played just 11 Minor League games in left field before being called up.
¡°Obviously, there are things I need to work on,¡± Dom¨ªnguez said through an interpreter in September. ¡°But I feel like with more work, I can get there. ¡ I¡¯ve been working almost every day in left field, getting my fungoes, shagging, everything. I don¡¯t think I¡¯m that far [off].¡±
The Yankees will consider using Dom¨ªnguez at the top of the batting order, according to Boone, who said that he believes ¡°Dom¨ªnguez¡¯s DNA is that, because he gets on a lot, he also has power and can really run, too.¡± By comparison, Boone said Bellinger and Chisholm have a blend of power and bat-to-ball abilities that fit better in the middle of the lineup.
Another outfield option to watch could be Everson Pereira, whom Boone said has fully recovered from Tommy John surgery; the manager said that he believes Pereira ¡°can play into the mix for us.¡±
For months, Boone has wrestled with his call at third base. Chisholm made all but one of his starts at the position after being acquired from the Marlins in late July, despite never having played the hot corner as a professional.
There were some raw moments, mostly related to positioning, but Chisholm largely provided what the Yankees needed. His 400 1/3 innings at third base yielded -2 DRS, but 6 OAA. By comparison, Chisholm has 156 career starts at second base (7 DRS and 8 OAA in 1,330 1/3 innings).
¡°He was really good at third,¡± Boone said. ¡°I think people just look at him and think he looks like more of a second baseman, but the reality is, he played the heck out of third.¡±
If Chisholm begins the year at second base, Boone said he sees a spring battle between Oswaldo Cabrera, DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza for the starting third base job.
The most experienced choice is LeMahieu, but injuries limited him to 67 games last season, and he has been a below-average offensive player since the beginning of 2021 (.252/.336/.362, 95 OPS+).
¡°He¡¯s going to have that opportunity,¡± Boone said. ¡°And the reality is, DJ has been an amazing hitter. He¡¯s just been hurt. And so hopefully with some health, some of that bat can return, because he can still really defend. Whether it¡¯s an everyday level or if it¡¯s against lefties, I do think there is a role for him. I think it¡¯s just going to be dependent on his health.¡±
