Mathews...was placed on NL's Suspended List Aug. 23-27 as result of bench-clearing altercation Aug. 12 vs. Houston...was final regular-season batter in Atlanta- Fulton County Stadium history ...his uncle, Matty, was 1st hitter in stadium's inaugural season (1966).

Was limited to 93 games due to injuries, but still hit 14 HRs and drove in 58 runs...suffered torn right biceps muscle June 6 at Los Angeles making an off-balance throw...damaged left rotator cuff while diving for ball July 13 vs. Philadelphia...stayed in lineup until mid-August before going on Disabled List Aug. 19-Sept. 5...played in just 1 more game (Sept. 9) before returning to Disabled List for rest of season...underwent arthroscopic surgery Sept. 11 to repair labrum tear in right rotator cuff...underwent same surgery on left rotator cuff Oct. 3.

1994

Finished 3rd in NL MVP balloting after batting .339 (4th in NL) with 22 HRs and 78 RBI...was winner of Buck Canel Award as Latin American Player of Year...was named to The Sporting News' All-Star team and earned Silver Slugger award...earned NL Player of Week honors for week ending June 12...went to All-Star Game for 1st time...had 10th-inning game-winning RBI double off Jason Bere in NL's 8-7 victory at Pittsburgh.

Hit .286 with 18 HRs and 85 RBI as Montreal's starting left fielder...had 1st career 2-HR game July 6 vs. San Francisco, starting a stretch in which he homered in 4 straight contests (6 total clouts)...earned NL Player of Week honors for July 5-July 11...his season ended Sept. 16 at St. Louis when he suffered fractured fibula and dislocation of left ankle...injury occurred when his spikes caught in Busch Stadium artificial turf as he rounded 1st base...underwent ligament surgery on ankle Sept. 18, with Drs. Larry Coughlin and Mitch Rubinovich presiding...fixation screws were removed Nov. 16.

Missed campaign after injuring right shoulder during Dominican Winter League season...was injured in November 1990 while diving on pickoff attempt...underwent surgery, performed by Dr. Frank Jobe, April 10 to repair superior labrum tear and rotator cuff tear in shoulder.

Saw his 1st big league action during season in which he wore 5 uniforms...began year with Pittsburgh's double-A affiliate Harrisburg...after hitting .295 in 36 games, was promoted to triple-A Buffalo May 24...Pirates purchased contract from Buffalo July 26...made his ML debut that night as defensive replacement against Philadelphia...less than 24 hours later, his cousin, Mel Rojas, was called up by Montreal...collected 1st hit July 28, single off Phillies' Bruce Ruffin...was optioned to Buffalo July 29...was traded to Montreal Aug. 16 and sent to triple-A Indianapolis...returned to majors, this time with Montreal, Sept. 1.

1989

Saw minor league action with single-A Salem and double-A Harrisburg in Pirates chain, hitting 17 HRs in 140 games...earned Carolina League All-Star honors at Salem, where he batted .302 with 14 HRs and 53 RBI in 86 games.

1988

Earned South Atlantic League All-Star honors at single-A Augusta, batting .313 with 35 extra-base hits and 62 RBI...was 2nd in league in batting, 3rd in on-base (.399) and 5th in slugging (.464).

Played for both of Pittsburgh's single-A clubs in Macon and Watertown.
