Made the Opening Day roster for the 1st time with the Royals...did not make his 1st start of the
season until April 13 vs. Cleveland...was charged with the 6-1 loss after allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in 4.0
innings...the loss ended the Royals franchise record 9-game winning streak to begin the 2003 season.
Posted a 10-8 record, leading the team in wins...ranked 8th among American League pitchers with a .246
opponent batting average.
Set career highs in wins (10), games (35), starts (32), innings pitched (210.0), strikeouts (115) and
ERA (3.77).
His 10 wins and 115 strikeouts were the most by a Royals left-handed pitcher since Jose Rosado won 10
in 1999...his 210.0 innings were the most by a Royals lefty since Chris Haney threw 228.0 in 1996.
Was the team's most consistent pitcher, making 12 starts of 7.0 innings or more...failed to throw at
least 6.0 innings in just 7 of his 32 starts.
Had 14 no decisions during his career-best campaign, despite leaving 7 of those games in position to

Was moved to the bullpen with the addition of RHP Kyle Snyder to the rotation...made his 1st relief
appearance of the season at Minnesota on May 15 and was charged with a blown save, despite one of the team's

Watched the Royals suffer another 1-run loss to Oakland on May 31...marked his 10th straight game (8th
start) without a decision (6.0 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 HR, 1 BB, 3 SO).
Was charged with a 5-2 loss at at Los Angeles on June 5...surrendered 4 runs (3 earned), 6 hits and 1
walk in 7.1 innings.
Suffered a 4-3 loss vs. Arizona on June 11 after allowing 4 earned runs on 9 hits and 2 walks in 6.2

May was the victim of another blown save from the KC bullpen as KC suffered a 9-8 loss to Minnesota on

Tossed his 1st complete game of the year on July 2 vs. Cleveland, an 8-2 victory, scattering 6 hits

Won his 3rd straight game on July 8 at Anaheim in the Royals 4-0 shutout victory over the defending
World Champions (7.0 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 3 SO).
Earned his 4th straight victory at Texas on July 13 at Texas after giving up just 1 ER, 7 hits and 1
walk in 5.0 innings...also struck out 6 batters in the game.
Won a career-best 5th straight start on July 19 vs. Seattle...held the Mariners to just 1 earned run,

Was charged with KC's 6-0 loss on Aug. 12 vs. New York by allowing 5 earned runs, a season-high 12

Grabbed a 5-4 win against the Twins on Aug. 17, giving the Royals a 3.0 game lead in the
division...allowed 3 ER, 6 hits and struck out 3 in 6.1 innings.
Posted his 1st career 9-inning shutout victory on Aug. 27 vs. Texas (9-0 Royals win)...allowed a
career-low 5 hits and faced just 2 over the minimum after the 2nd inning.
Ended a 3-game winning streak by taking the Royals 7-3 loss on Sept. 1 at Texas...allowed 4 runs (3
earned) on 4 hits, 2 walks and 6 strikeouts in 6.0 innings...all 3 earned runs were home runs...it was the
Royals 1st loss to the Rangers this season.
2002
Opened the season on the Disabled List with a left groin strain (retro to March 27)...was activated on April 13 and made his 1st start since Sept. 8, 1997 at Toronto...pitched 4.1 innings, allowing 2 hits (both home runs) at Cleveland, before leaving the game with a reaggravation of the injury to his left groin.
Was placed on the D.L. on April 14...was activated again on May 18 and started that night in Cleveland.
Other than his 3 rehab starts in Wichita (AA) and Omaha (AAA), it marked the 1st complete season at the Major League level for May, who completed his 11th season of professional baseball.
Earned his 1st win of the season at Chicago on June 6 in a 4-3 decision (5.0 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 SO)...it was his 1st Major League win since Aug. 31, 1997 with Anaheim at San Francisco.
Was credited with a complete game victory after defeating Florida in a 5-inning, rain-shortened game at Kauffman Stadium on June 11.
Threw a career-best 9 innings in a 1-0 loss to Anaheim on July 11 (9.0 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 5 SO)...it was his 2nd career complete game, his 1st in a 9-inning game.

Recalled by Pittsburgh on May 7...made his 1st Major League start on May 8 vs. San Diego, a 5-4 loss (5.0 IP, 5 ER).
