In 1987 graduated from Loretta (TN) High School, where he played baseball and basketball...was All- State in baseball as a sophomore, junior and senior...was All-District in basketball as a junior and senior...was All- Region in basketball as a senior...played baseball at Motlow State (TN) Community College.
2008

For the second straight season led the pitching staff in saves (12) and games finished (32)... pitched in at least 60g for the eighth straight season and pitched in at least 65g for the sixth time in his career... in his last 32 apps beginning 7/5 posted a 1.47era (36.2ip, 6er), dropping overall ERA from 5.59 to seasonending 3.54...didn't allow an earned run in 29 of those 32 apps...posted a 1.64era in 29 apps after the All-Star break, including a 0.82era in 8 apps in September...allowed 8 of his 29 earned runs in a 3-appearance span from 6/11-6/20 (1.1ip)...his overall ERA without that stretch is 2.61...converted 9 of his first 10 save opps, including a streak of 6 straight from 4/21-5/7, then went 0-for-5 in save opps until he saved the 6-3 victory at SF on 8/24...converted his last 3 save opps...14 times threw more than 1.0 inning and 10 times threw at least 2.0 innings...began the season as the staff's closer and recorded 9 of Cin's first 11 saves through 5/7... in mid-May returned to a setup role as Todd Coffey earned 7 of the bullpen's 8 saves from 5/18-6/29... remained in that setup role after the 7/6 acquisition of Eddie Guardado, who earned 8 of the staff's 10 saves from 7/13-8/12...after Guardado went on the disabled list on 8/20 with a season-ending injury earned 3 of the Reds' last 6 saves of the season.
2005
As one of the Reds' most dependable pitchers led the staff with a career-high 15 saves...with 7 victories fell 1 shy of his career high...became the club's closer after Danny Graves was designated for assignment on 5/23 and after that date recorded a 3.54era with all 15 of his saves...in his last 59 apps of the season beginning 5/7 posted a 3.19era...converted 15-19 save opps...in mid-July was bothered by a strained lower back and in his first 4 apps after the All-Star break allowed 4er in 2.2ip, raising ERA from 3.57 to 4.13...finished the season by posting a 3.64era in his last 29 apps...after facing 3 batters on 7/19 vs Chi left the game with that back injury...in the 5-3 win on 5/23 vs Wsh recorded his first save since 9/2/03 with the Mets vs Atl...in the ninth inning of the 11-10 loss on 9/23 vs Phi allowed 5er on a 3-run HR to Chase Utley and a 2-run HR to David Bell...allowed at least 2 homers in a game for the seventh time in his career, for the third time in relief and for the first time since 6/11/02 for NYM at WSox...his season ERA excluding that 9/23 appearance drops to 3.40 and his second-half ERA drops to 3.16...on 11/15 had arthroscopic surgery to repair a small tear in the medial meniscus of his right knee (Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...on 1/16/06 suffered a torn extensor tendon in his right index finger...was expected to recover in 3-4 weeks.
2004
Combined to go 7-7, 4.15 in 2 starts and 64 relief apps for the Mets, Astros and Marlins...the 7 victories was the second-highest total of his career...began the season with NYM...on 6/17 was traded to Hou for OF Richard Hidalgo...on 9/7 was released by the Astros and the next day signed with Fla...as a Marlin made his first 2 starts since 1998...made those starts in a 5-2 victory vs the Cubs in the nightcap of a home doubleheader on 9/20 (5ip, 2h, 1r) and received no decision in the 6-2 loss at Phi on 10/1 (4ip, 4h, 1r)...that 9/20 appearance vs Chi was his first as a starter since 5/22/98 vs Col while pitching for the Reds and snapped a streak of 455 consecutive relief apps...was his first victory as a starter since 4/25/98 for Cin at NYM.
2003
Ranked fifth in the National League with 26 holds...his 77 apps tied Turk Wendell (2000) and Armando Benitez (1999) for second on the Mets' all-time single-season list, behind only Turk Wendell's club-record 80 apps in 1999...in his last 18 apps of the season posted a 1.74era (20.2ip, 4er)...earned his career-high seventh save in a 3-1 victory vs Atl on 9/2...20 times threw at least 2.0 innings...from 5/22-7/17 didn't allow a run in 21 of his 25 apps (1.30era).
2002
Produced one of the best seasons by any reliever in the Major Leagues...for the Mets went 6-3, 2.91 in 71 relief apps...allowed just 69 hits in 77.1 innings...earned his 40th career victory in the 4-2 win vs at Wrigley Field on 4/10...on 4/13 vs Mtl didn't allow a run in a season-high 3.0 innings...didn't allow a run in 9 apps from 8/30-9/22 (11.1ip).
2001
Ranked fifth in the National League with a career-high 80 apps for the Brewers and Cubs...opposing batters hit just .216...stranded 36-44 inherited baserunners (82%)...began the season with Mil...on 7/30 was traded to the Cubs, along with minor league P Roberto Miniel, for minor leaguers P Ruben Quevedo and OF Peter Zoccolillo.
2000
Established a career high with 69 apps, a personal mark he would break in 2001...from 8/2-8/22 was on the disabled list with a strained oblique muscle in his left side...faced 118 lefthanded batters and allowed just 1 homer (Luis Gonzalez, 5/27 at Ari)...recorded his only save in a 4-3 victory at Wrigley Field on 5/9.
1999
With a career-high 7 victories ranked seventh among all National League relievers...also ranked seventh among NL relievers with 93.0 innings pitched...on 4/10 at Hou recorded his first Major League save and as a batter singled off Brian Williams...threw 4.0 innings to earn that save.
1998
Began the season with the Reds and went 2-4, 6.21 in 16 apps, including 9 starts, before he was designated for assignment on 6/19...5 days later was claimed off waivers by Mil...for the Brewers went 4-1, 3.21 in 28 relief apps...on 5/2 at Mil, while still with the Reds, was the winning pitcher and produced his second career home run (solo off Jeff Juden).
1997
Made 19 Major League apps for the Yankees and Indians...also made 16 apps, all starts, at Class AAA Columbus and Buffalo...began the season with NYY...was designated for assignment on 4/26, cleared waivers and outrighted off the roster on 5/5...on 6/9 was traded to Cle in exchange for OF Chad Curtis.
1996
During the regular season made 42 apps, including 12 starts, for Fla and NYY...posted a 0.82era in 7 playoff apps for the World Series champion Yankees...earned victories in Game 4 of the American League Division Series at Tex and Game 4 of the AL Championship Series at Bal...pitched in the clinching Game 6 of the World Series vs Atl...began the season with the Marlins and made 31 apps, including 8 starts, before he was traded to NYY on 7/31 in exchange for RHP Mark Hutton...from 8/21-9/12 made 5 starts for Columbus before he returned to the Yankees for the rest of the season on 9/13...on 5/21 at Cin, while with the Marlins, hit his first Major League home run (off Roger Salkeld).
1995
Made 15 starts and 13 relief apps for the Marlins...from 6/26-7/12 was on the disabled list with a lacerated right pinky finger...suffered the injury on 6/25 at Cin while attempting to bunt...made rehab starts at Brevard County and Charlotte...on 4/28 at SF tied the club record for strikeouts by a reliever (5).
1994
Led the Marlins' pitching staff in starts (24)...established the franchise record for victories in April with 4, including decisions over Tom Glavine, Jose Rijo and Curt Schilling...posted a 2.10era in April.
1993
Joined the Marlins organization after he was selected in Major League Baseball's expansion draft... began the season at Class AAA Edmonton...was promoted on 7/6 and that night at Col made his National League debut (0.2ip)...on 7/30 at Mtl collected his first Major League hit in his first career plate appearance (infield single off Chris Nabholz)...in the 2-0 victory vs SD on 9/6 threw 8.0 shutout innings to win his first career start...for Class AAA Edmonton led the Pacific Coast League in winning percentage (.733) and ranked third in ERA (3.83)...was a PCL mid-season and post-season All-Star...was selected to participate in the 1993 Triple-A All-Star Game but did not pitch because he was promoted by the Marlins.
