Gregory Scott (Woody) Williams...Woody and his wife, Kimberli, have four children: daughters Hannah (April 26, 1993), Lillian (October 15, 2002) and Katelyn (May 24, 1988) and son Caden (April 27, 1995)...was an All-District shortstop at Cypress-Fairbanks High School, where he also played football and basketball....earned an Associate of Arts degree from Alvin CC (TX) and later transferred to the University of Houston, where he was an All-Region shortstop (1987-88)...started the "Woody's Winners" program in 2000 to reach out to the Special Olympics of San Diego and North County...was the Padres nomination for the 2006 Roberto Clemente Award and received the Padres Chairman Award in 2005 and 2000, becoming the first player in franchise history to receive the award twice.
2007

Won a career-high 18 games (18-9) in a team-high 33 starts with a 3.87 ERA (95ER/220.2IP)...his 18 wins ranked second in the NL...he tossed a career-high 220.2 innings, which ranked fifth in the NL, and surpassed the 200-inning mark for the fourth time in his career...had a 12-3 record with a 3.00 ERA (42ER/126IP) in 18 starts at Busch Stadium and went 13-4 with a 3.50 ERA (61ER/157IP) in night-time starts...averaged 110 pitches per start, the third-highest mark in the NL...the Cardinals supported him with 6.2 runs per game, the highest figure in the NL....selected to his first All-Star team...pitched the sixth inning, allowing two runs on two hits...was the first Cardinal to win 12 games before the All-Star Break since Kent Bottenfield won 14 in 1999...opened the season tossing 25.0 consecutive scoreless innings...made his season debut April 2 vs. Milwaukee and held the Brewers to just two hits over 6.2 innings...held a no-hitter through 5.2 innings...shut out Arizona for 7.0 innings on three hits in a 6-3 win on April 18...did not allow a hit until the fifth inning...had his 25.0-inning scoreless streak snapped on April 24 at Atlanta after the Braves scored two runs in the sixth...in five April starts, went 4-0 with a 1.09 ERA...won 10 straight games from Sept. 3, 2002-May 26, 2003...in 14 starts, he boasted a 2.04 ERA (21ER/92.2IP), allowing just 78 hits...the streak, his career-best, came to an end May 31 vs. Pittsburgh...in that game, he allowed four runs (two earned) over 8.0 innings as the Cardinals lost 4-3...on July 5 vs. Toronto, no-hit the Blue Jays for 7.1 innings and left the game after 8.0 frames, allowing just one hit and one walk...knocked his first career triple and tallied a career-best four RBI...fanned Eric Karros in the fourth inning to tally his 1,000th career strikeout on July 6 at Chicago...despite allowing four home runs on July 20 at Los Angeles, he won his 13th game of the season...also hit his third homer of the season off Odalis Perez in the fourth inning...hit into the 12th unassisted triple play (Rafael Furcal) in Major League history on Aug. 10 vs. Atlanta...on Sept. 3 at Chicago, made his first relief appearance since June 6, 1996...entered in the eighth and allowed one run in 0.2 innings and was charged with the loss.
2002
Went 9-4 with a 2.53 ERA (29ER/103.1IP) in an injury-shortened season...made two trips to the Disabled List, April 6-May 15 and July 7- Aug. 29, both times due to a strained left oblique muscle...made his season debut on April 5 at Houston, but left the game after 2.0 innings with a left oblique strain and was placed on the 15-day DL the next day...did not make a rehab start before being activated on May 15...won consecutive starts on May 20 vs. Cincinnati and May 25 at Pittsburgh to extend his winning streak to seven games...the streak, which included his final five starts of 2001, was snapped in his next outing as he suffered the loss on May 31 vs. Pittsburgh...allowed three runs on 10 hits over 7.0 innings as the Cardinals lost 3-1...tossed his 10th career complete game, a five-hitter, on June 16 vs. Kansas City...was on the losing end of a 2-1 loss at Chicago (NL) on June 21, a game that lasted just 1 hour and 49 minutes...that game, which featured just six combined hits and no walks, was the shortest the Cardinals had played since May 31, 1981...won his sixth game of the season on July 1 vs. San Diego after tossing eight innings and allowing three runs...also knocked his second career home run, a solo shot off Oliver Perez...on July 6 vs. Los Angeles, was pulled after 5.0 innings with back spasms...placed on the Disabled List on July 13 (retroactive to July 7) with a left oblique strain...made one rehab start with Triple A Memphis on Aug. 24 at Nashville before being activated on Aug. 29...made the start that night at Cincinnati and took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits over 4.0 innings...that start snapped his streak of 19 consecutive games of allowing three earned runs or fewer (streak began Aug. 25, 2001)...left his final start of the season, Sept. 20 vs. Houston, after the fifth inning due to tightness in his side... the Cardinals went on to win the game and clinch the NL Central title...was not available to pitch in the Division Series vs. Arizona, but was activated for the League Championship Series against San Francisco...took the loss in Game 2 after allowing three runs on six hits over 6.0 innings.
2001
Went 15-9 with a 4.05 ERA (99ER/220IP) with 154 strikeouts in 33 starts between San Diego and St. Louis...established new career-bests in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched...was traded to the Cardinals on Aug. 2 in exchange for outfielder Ray Lankford...went 7-1 with a 2.28 ERA in 11 starts with the Cardinals...named NL Pitcher of the Month for September after going 4-0 with a 1.13 ERA...the honor marked the first of his career and came after he tossed two complete games, including one shutout, allowing just 10 hits while striking out 26 in his 32.0 innings...went 5-0 with a 0.94 ERA (5ER/48IP) in his final six starts...the six-game stretch included three complete games with a two-hitter, a three-hitter and a four-hitter...worked 7.0 or more innings in 15 of his 34 starts and failed to go 5.0 innings only twice (April 24 vs. Philadelphia and Aug. 10 at New York Mets)...was the Padres' Opening Day starter, his first Opening Day assignment, but suffered a 3-2 loss at San Francisco on April 2...allowed three runs on six hits over 5.2 innings...struck out a season-high nine in 6.1 innings, but did not receive a decision on June 17 vs. Seattle...started at Arizona on July 23, his first career start on three days rest...earned a 4-2 win after allowing one run in 5.0 innings...went 3-1 with a 3.75 ERA in six August starts...made his first postseason start in Game 2 of the Division Series against Arizona...tossed 7.0 innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine as the Cardinals won 4-1.
2000
Won the Clyde McCullough Award as Padres Pitcher of the Year and earned the Chairman's Award for community service in his second San Diego season...went 10-8 with a 3.75 ERA in 23 starts, despite missing two months due to surgery to repair an aneurysm under his right armpit...overcame the missed time to lead the staff in complete games (four, tied for eighth in the NL) and opponents average (.239, ninth in the NL)...ranked second on the club with 23 starts, 168.0 innings pitched and 111 strikeouts...averaged 7.30 innings per start, tops in the National League among pitchers with at least 20 starts and second to only Boston's Pedro Martinez (7.48) in all of baseball...the Padres went 11-12 in his 23 starts and scored a total of only 15 runs in his eight losses (1.9 per game), including a total of three runs in his last four setbacks...15 of his 23 starts were quality starts, a team-best 65 percent...opened the season 3-2 with a 5.21 ERA (22ER/38IP) in six starts before being diagnosed with an aneurysm near his right armpit on May 2...had experienced numbness in the fingers of his pitching hand in his first six starts, including an 8.1 inning effort on May 1 vs. Florida, the night before tests revealed he had been pitching with the ailment...underwent successful surgery performed by Dr. Ralph Dilley at Scripps Clinic, Green Hospital, in San Diego on May 4 and, after a pair of minor league rehab appearances, returned on July 2 and went 7-6 with a 3.32 ERA (48ER/130IP) over his final 17 starts...worked 8.0 strong innings in a no-decision in his first post-surgery start July 2 vs. Colorado, allowing two runs on nine hits...walked one and fanned five...averaged 6.1 innings in six starts before surgery and 7.2 innings after...in 17 starts after his return, lasted at least 7.0 innings 14 times...tied for eighth in the NL with a career-high four complete games after going the distance only twice in 109 previous ML starts...entered his July 31 start vs. Philadelphia with two complete games in 120 starts, but finished the year with four complete games in his last 12 starts (July 31 vs. Philadelphia, Aug. 15 at Atlanta, Sept. 11 vs. Colorado and Sept. 23 at Los Angeles)...worked 9.0 innings on Aug. 21 vs. New York (NL), but did not get credit for a complete game in the Padres' 10-inning 5-4 victory...worked at least 6.0 innings in 21 of 23 starts, including the last 18 in a row...worked at least 7.0 innings 17 times and at least 8.0 innings 11 times...completed at least 8.0 innings in nine of his final 12 starts...worked at least 5.0 innings in 36 of his last 37 starts since July 22, 1999 (4.1 innings, April 10, 2000 vs. Arizona)...allowed 16 runs (15 earned), a .315 (29-for-92) average and four homers in the first inning; opponents hit .239 (152-for-636) with 19 homers from the second inning on...posted a 5.87 ERA (15ER/23IP) in the first half and a 3.41 ERA (55ER/145IP) after...hit .259 (15x58) with four doubles, a homer, nine RBI, and 10 runs scored...ranked third in batting average among Major League pitchers with at least 40 plate appearances, trailing teammate Adam Eaton (.289) and the Mets' Mike Hampton (.278)...ranked fifth among pitchers in hits, tied for second in extra-base hits (five) and tied for third in RBI (nine)...registered the first two three-hit games of his career: going 3x3 with a double, a homer and two RBI on July 20 at San Francisco and 3x4 with an RBI on Sept. 6 vs. Milwaukee...his fifth-inning two-run homer off Kirk Rueter on July 20 at San Francisco was the first of his career and the first by a Padres' pitcher in 629 at-bats since Joey Hamilton took Brian Bohanon deep on July 12, 1998 at Dodger Stadium.
1999
In his first Padres' season, he won his final five decisions en route to establishing career highs in wins (12) and starts (33)...matched Sterling Hitchcock for staff-high honors in starts...his 208.1 innings pitched led the Padres while his 137 strikeouts trailed only Hitchcock...base stealers were only 6x16 (38 percent) attempting to steal against Williams, the best rate among NL right-handers (minimum of 162.0 innings) and the third-lowest success rate in the league behind Atlanta's Terry Mulholland (1x5, 20 percent) and San Francisco's Kirk Rueter (4x12, 33.3 percent)...did not allow a stolen base in his final 71.0 innings after Montreal's Rondell White swiped second on Aug. 7...fanned a career-high 12 in 6.0 innings, establishing a 1999 Padres season high, in a 7-6 win at Philadelphia on Aug. 23...finished 5-3 with a 3.63 ERA (36 ER/89.1 IP) in 14 starts at home and went 6-9 with a 4.99 ERA (66 ER/119.0 IP) in 19 starts on the road...the Padres went 18-15 in his 33 starts, including wins in the final six and in seven of his last eight...made a club-high 19 quality starts (58 percent)...led the San Diego pitching staff in batting average, hits, extra-base hits (4), and RBI...laid down four sacrifices, and fanned only 19 times in 73 at-bats.
1998
For the second consecutive season, established career highs with 10 victories, 32 starts, 209.2 innings pitched, and 151 strikeouts in his sixth and final campaign with the Blue Jays...was 8-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 17 starts before the All-Star Break and 2-6 with a 5.46 ERA in 15 starts after the Break...limited the opposition to a .245 average, ninth-best in the American League...ranked among AL leaders in pitches per start (fourth with 110.66), hits per innings pitched (ninth with 0.93), base runners per nine innings (10th with 12.0), and on-base percentage allowed (10th with .314)...Blue Jays went 14-18 in his 32 starts...worked 7.0 innings or more in 15 starts and went at least 5.0 innings in 31 of 32 starts...opponents batted just .203 with runners in scoring position, third-best in the league...limited right-handed hitters to a .220 batting average, fourthbest in the AL...was perfect through 5.0 innings in a 6-3 win at Oakland on May 3...took a no-hitter into the eighth on May 19 vs. Tampa Bay, but Kevin Stocker broke up the bid with a ground-ball single to right to start the frame.
1997
Used exclusively as a starter for the first time in his Major League career and posted then-career highs in wins (nine), starts (31), innings pitched (194.2), and strikeouts (124)...stuck with a loss or a no-decision in eight starts in which he allowed two earned runs or fewer as he received the least run support per nine innings pitched (3.19 runs) in the AL...18 of his 31 starts were quality starts...worked at least 6.0 innings in 24 starts, including 14 of his last 16...allowed a career-high four home runs, June 3 at Seattle...did not start again until the Blue Jays' first-ever Interleague game on June 13 at Philadelphia, due to tendinitis in his right shoulder...allowed a run in 5.1 innings in a no-decision and also collected the first-ever hit by a Toronto pitcher in a regular season contest...won three consecutive starts immediately following the All-Star Break from July 13-24...finished 3-2 with a 3.34 ERA in July...tossed 7.0 scoreless innings in a 3-0 win vs. Boston on Sept. 26 in his final start of the season.
1996
Opened the season on the DL, still recovering from 1995 shoulder surgery...rehabbed at Single A Dunedin and Triple A Syracuse prior to making his first appearance of the season on June 2 with 2.0 scoreless innings vs. Kansas City...made one more appearance, June 6 at New York, before returning to the DL on June 11...after two rehab appearances at Syracuse and two more at Single A St. Catherines, was optioned to Triple A on July 26 and was recalled to Toronto on Aug. 5...made 10 consecutive starts, going 4-5 with a 4.61 ERA...on Sept. 4, threw 8.0 innings of five-hit shutout ball, striking out a then-career high nine vs. Kansas City...combined with Mike Timlin on a 6-0 shutout...in his final start, threw his first career complete game in a 4-1 loss vs. Baltimore on Sept. 26...gave up four earned runs on eight hits, walked two and fanned six.

Did not pitch in the Majors after July 16 due to shoulder problems...made the first three starts of his Major League career in his final three appearances...made his big league starting debut on July 2 vs. Baltimore...threw 7.0 shutout innings... left with two outs in the seventh, having allowed two runs on three hits...walked two and fanned six...ended up with a nodecision in a 9-7 loss...five days later, earned a 4-2 win at Oakland...allowed a run on three hits over 5.0 innings, walking one and striking out two...left with a sore right shoulder after 1.1 innings in his final start on July 16 at Seattle...was placed on the 15-day DL on July 20...underwent season-ending arthroscopic surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews to repair his rotator cuff and a labrum tear in his right shoulder on Sept. 12.

Made a career-high 38 appearances, all in relief...his 3.64 ERA included a 1.02 mark (2ER/17.2IP) after the All-Star break...led the AL with a .163 average allowed with runners on base...lefties hit only .184 (18x98), second-best in the league... opened the season 1-1 with a 5.79 ERA through 20 appearances before being optioned to Syracuse on June 9 after throwing 5.0 innings of three-hit shutout relief to earn a 7-5 win against the Yankees that same day...made just one appearance for the Chiefs before being recalled, logging a 1.72 ERA in his first 18 games after his return...finished the season with 15.2 consecutive scoreless innings...stranded 17 of 20 inherited runners.

Opened the season with Syracuse but was recalled by the Blue Jays on May 14 to make his Major League debut that same day...allowed two earned runs on three hits in 0.2 innings at New York...was optioned back to Triple A on May 21, but was recalled four days later when Todd Stottlemyre went on the DL...earned his first Major League win on June 4 with 2.2 innings of shutout relief vs. Oakland...earned wins in three of four appearances from June 4-22 and was 3-0 with a 2.37 ERA through his first 13 Major League appearances.
