2011
After having one of the most forgettable first-halves of his career, Javier Vazquez had one of the best stretches of his career in the second half of 2011, capping the season, which may have been his last before retirement, with National League Pitcher of the Month honors in September. It was the second time he has won Player of the Month honors; the first was in August of 2001 with Montreal...Vazquez was a perfect 5-0 in five starts in September, with two complete games, leading the NL in wins for the month. His 0.71 ERA (38.0 IP/3 ER) was far and away the lowest mark of the month for a starter with five-or-more starts, his 0.63 WHIP was the lowest by .12 points over Clayton Kershaw and his strikeout-to-walk ratio of 12.00 was surpassed only by Cliff Lee (20.00)...In his final seven starts of the season, Vazquez went 6-0 with a 1.04 ERA (52.0/6), recorded a .168 opponents' batting average (30x179) and struck out 53 batters while issuing just six free passes. In that span (beginning with his start on August 24) he tied Madison Bumgarner, Doug Fister and Gio Gonzalez for the Major League lead in wins, had the lowest ERA in the National League (second in the Majors to Fister-0.55) and was second only to Yovani Gallardo (59) for the Major League lead in strikeouts. Also, his opponents' batting average was second-lowest in the Majors, behind Fister (.142)...His six consecutive wins in his last six starts tied a career high that he had accomplished just once previously, from August 12, 2001 to April 13, 2002 with Montreal...During the win streak, Vazquez set a new Franchise record for the most consecutive scoreless innings pitched by any pitcher, at 29.0. The streak lasted over the course of five games, from the fifth inning of his 7.0-inning outing in New York on September 5 through the fourth inning of his final start of the season on September 27 against the Nationals. Vazquez surpassed two of the oldest records in the Club's annals, beating Pat Rapp's record for a starter (24.2 from September 12-27, 1995) and Luis Aquino's overall record, done as a reliever (26.1, May 9-July 26, 1994). The 29.0 innings marked the fourth-longest streak in the Majors this season, behind 37.2 by Craig Kimbrel (June-14-Sept. 8). Cliff Lee had streaks of 34.0 (June 11-July 3) and 30.2 (August 17-September 10). - Stats Inc...With a win on September 11, Vazquez became the 35 th pitcher in Major League history to record a streak of 12-or-more consecutive seasons with 10-or-more wins. He is the first pitcher to do so since Mike Mussina, who had a 17-season streak from 1992-2008...He passed Christy Mathewson (2,502) for 29th place on the all-time strikeout list in his outing on September 5 against the Mets, finishing the game with 2,507 for his career. He finished the season with 2,536 strikeouts, 20 away from passing Tim Keefe (2,555) for 28th place...When he reached the 2,500-strikeout mark in his start on August 30 at Citi Field against the Mets, he became the ninth-fastest pitcher to achieve the milestone in MLB history, tied with Curt Schilling at 445 games...The Fish won 13 of his last 18 starts...Over his first 14 starts of the season, Vazquez had just a 3-7 record while holding the highest ERA among qualifying starting pitchers at 6.85 (71.0 IP/54 ER). In 18 starts after that, he went 10-4, including a six-start win streak to close out the season, and owned the third-lowest ERA in the Majors in that time at 1.85 (121.2 IP/25 ER) behind Clayton Kershaw (1.65) and Cliff Lee (1.82). In those 18 starts, he surrendered more than three runs just two times, while limiting opponents to two-or-fewer runs 12 times. His strikeoutto-walk ratio in that span was 6.59/1 (112 K's/17 BB's), which was secondbest in MLB to Cliff Lee (7.06/1)...Vazquez had a pitching line for the ages in the Marlins' victory over the Angels on June 21. He allowed 10 hits in just 5.1 innings, but none of the base-runners crossed home plate as the Marlins snapped their 11-game losing streak with a 5-2 win. Only two other pitchers since 1900 have allowed at least 10 hits in less than 6.0 innings pitched without allowing a run: Boston's Bill Lee on June 15, 1974 (10 hits and no runs in five innings against the Angels) and the Cubs' Chuck Rainey on August 3, 1983 (10 hits and no runs in five innings against the Cardinals). - Elias...He batted .179 (10x56) this season, with five runs, a double, two RBI, two walks, 10 strikeouts and nine sacrifice hits. He is a career .204 hitter (114x560) with 14 doubles, two triples, one home run, 29 RBI, two sac flies and 105 sac hits...He recorded his first career pinch hit on September 4 of this season in the series finale against Philadelphia; he is 1x4 as a pinch hitter in his career. He connected for his only career home run on May 28, 2005 vs. Los Angeles (NL), driving a Duaner Sanchez offering out of the park in the seventh inning. Has posted a career-best two hits 15 times in his career, with the last coming on August 7 of this season against St. Louis...He had a .964 fielding percentage this season, making one error in 28 total chances, with seven putouts and 20 assists. The error was his first since 2007. He was perfect in 123 total chances between 2008 and 2010. His career fielding percentage is .978, with 13 errors in 593 totals chances (162 putouts, 418 assists)...He finished the season as one of three active Major Leaguers to have defeated all 30 teams, joining Barry Zito and Vincente Padilla (Elias). He has also started in 44 different stadiums, the most among active pitchers.
