Full name is Luis Arias Vizcaino...he and his wife, Esmerelda, make their home in his native Bani, Dominican Republic...was signed by Santiago Villalona (Oakland) at the age of 17 as a non-drafted free agent.

Opened the season at Class A Modesto, but earned a promotion to Double A Huntsville in late July ... posted a combined 9-5 record with a 3.26 ERA in 30 games, 23 starts ... allowed a .220 opponents batting average which broke down to .195 against right handers and .251 against left handers ... had a four-game winning streak over his last 12 appearances at Modesto before he was promoted to Huntsville on July 29 ... was 6-3 with a 2.74 ERA in 23 games, 16 starts, at the time of his promotion ... allowed a .196 opponents batting average and struck out 108 in 102.0 innings ... made seven appearances at Huntsville, all starts, and went 3-2 with a 4.66 ERA ... made one relief appearance in the post-season for the Stars ... went 4-1 with a 3.60 ERA in eight relief appearances with Aguilas in the Dominican Winter League.

1997

Began the year in extended spring training, but was moved up to Modesto on May 22 ... made seven relief appearances with the A's and posted a 13.19 ERA before he was moved to Southern Oregon on June 14 when the Northwest League season started ... continued to struggle with the Timber Jacks, posting a 1-6 record and 7.93 ERA in 22 games, five starts.

1996

Spent his first year in the United States with the A's affiliate in the Arizona Rookie League ... was 6-3 with a save and a 4.07 ERA in 15 games, 10 starts ... tied for third in the league in wins ... led the A's in wins, starts, and innings pitched and was second in strikeouts ... allowed just one home run in 59.2 innings ... named Arizona League Pitcher of the Week, August 26 - 31.
