Clayton Richard was acquired from Pittsburgh, July 3, for a cash consideration and went 4-2 with two holds and a 3.83 ERA (18 ER/42.1 IP) in 23 appearances with the Cubs, including three starts … was his first major league action since appearing in 12 games with San Diego in 2013. Went 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA (6 ER/18.0 IP) in three starts with Chicago, including quality starts, July 4 vs. Miami and August 2 at Milwaukee. Ptched a season-high 6.1 innings in his Cubs debut, July 4 vs. Miami, allowing just two runs on eight hits. Pitched exclusively in relief from August 12 through the end of the season, going 2-2 with a 3.38 ERA (8 ER/21.1 IP) in 19 outings. w Made three relief appearances of at least 3.0 innings, including a 4.0-inning effort, September 13 at Philadelphia (1 ER). Stranded 10 of 15 inherited runners while pitching in relief. Allowed just 12 earned runs in 33.0 innings (3.27 ERA) following the All-Star Break. Held lefties to a .234 average (15-for-64) while righties batted .294 (32-for-109). Missed most of the season recovering from acromioclavicular (AC) joint surgery performed in 2013, and thoracic outlet surgery performed in February ... signed a minor league contract with Arizona, August 1. Made his season debut with Double-A Mobile August 10 vs. Tennessee, allowing six runs in 3.0 innings, taking a no-decision. Lost each of his last two starts with Mobile before being transferred to Triple-A Reno, August 25. Started and allowed three runs in 6.1 innings in his only appearance with Reno, August 28 at Sacramento ... earned the win.
2013
Was limited to 12 appearances (11 starts) with the Padres before being placed on the disabled list for the rest of the season on June 22 with a left shoulder strain ... underwent left shoulder surgery. Went 2-5 with a 7.01 ERA (41 ER/52.2 IP) in his 12 outings with San Diego ... allowed 65 hits and walked 21 batters. Was placed on the disabled list May 5 with a viral infection ... made two starts with Triple-A Reno as part of a rehab assignment before being activated May 27.
