Favorite baseball move is The Sandlot...Grew up in New York as a Mets fan, and his favorite player was Johan Santana...Prior to playing with Single-A Lake Elsinore, he had been to California just once before...Grew up playing basketball, baseball and hockey...during his sophomore year of high school, he stuck with baseball and stopped playing the other sports...Enjoys listening to old-school rap, especially Nas and Wu-Tang Clan...Was drafted by the Padres on his 21st birthday: June 14, 2017...Underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2019. Following the procedure, switched from being utilized as a starter to a reliever...In 2022 Spring Training, Pitching Development Director Rob Marcello suggested Cosgrove drop to a three-quarters delivery, which Tom now uses...A native of Staten Island, N.Y., Tom attended Manhattan College, which is a few minute drive from Yankee Stadium.

2023

Had his contract selected and was added to the Padres’ 40-man roster in the offseason on Nov. 15, 2022...Among qualifying Major League rookie relievers, he ranked first in ERA (1.75) and opponents’ AVG (.173)...Posted the fourth-most appearances out of the SD 'pen (54), which ranked third among all NL rookies, behind only ARI’s Scott McGough (63) and CIN’s Fernando Cruz (58)...The 54 appearances were the most by a Padres’ rookie since Jose Torres’ 62 in 2017...Posted a franchise-record 14 consecutive scoreless appearances to begin his career from April 29-June 11, with the streak snapped in the eighth inning on June 11 @ COL, surrendering a game-tying solo HR to Ryan McMahon...the 15.0 consecutive scoreless IP was fifth longest scoreless-inning streak by a reliever to begin a career in SD history (excluding starts), trailing only Eric Show in '82 (18.1 IP), Tim Stauffer in '10 (17.1), Kevin Cameron in '07, (17.1) & Jeremy Fikac in '01 (16.0)...The 14 consecutive scoreless appearances and 15.0 straight scoreless IP were both the longest streaks by an SD reliever in ’23, ahead of Hader’s and Steven Wilson’s 13 appearances and Wilson’s 14.0 IP...Had reverse splits, limiting right-handed hitters to a .131 AVG while lefties hit .236...it’s the second-lowest opponent AVG in a single season by a LHP vs. RHH since 2015 (min .120 batters faced), when NYY’s Andrew Miller also posted a .131 opp. AVG vs. RHH...since ‘15, Cosgrove and Miller trail only Josh Hader’s .125 clip vs. RHH in ‘21 w/ MIL...Posted a 1.96 ERA @ home vs. 1.59 ERA on the road...was one of only five ML relievers and one of just two in the NL to own a sub-2.00 ERA in both home and away parks (min. 25 appearances in each), joining LAD’s Brusdar Graterol, BOS’ Chris Martin, HOU’s Hector Neris and TOR’s Tim Mayza...Threw his slider more than half the time at 52.2% with opponents hitting .153 (15-98) against it...the pitched averaged 19.4 inches of horizontal break, tops among all pitchers who threw at least 100 sliders, and Tom threw 437 sliders...the next closet amount of horizontal break was DET Andrew Vasquez’s 18.2 inches...He threw his four-seamer 24.3 percent of the time (.175 AVG against), and his sinker had a 23.2 percent usage rate (.220 AVG)...Ranked in the 95th percentile and above in avg exit velocity (100th, 83.9mph), hard-hit % (100th, 25.5%), xERA (99th, 2.62), xBA (98th, .184) and barrel % (95th, 3.6%).

2022

In 48 appearances between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso, posted a 3.72 ERA (23 ER, 55.2 IP) with a .173 opponent average and 1.11 WHIP...Held left-handed hitters to a .513 OPS...lefties slashed .136/.240/.273, while righties had a .727 OPS...Began the season with the Missions, posting a 2.45 ERA across 20 appearances and 25.2 innings of work before being promoted to Triple-A on June 28...In his 30.0 IP and 28 app. for the Chihuahuas, posted a 4.80 ERA and 43 strikeouts against 15 walks...opponents hit .200 against him at the Triple-A level, and lefties hit just .156...On Nov. 15, 2022, was selected to the Padres' 40-man roster, protecting him in the Rule 5 Draft that took place on December 7th at the Winter Meetings in San Diego.

2021

After losing all of 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he returned to action as a reliever in 2021, striking out 32 batters over 26.2 innings (2.36 ERA) at Double-A San Antonio...Made 22 appearances for the Missions (all in relief), posting a 0.98 WHIP and holding opponents to just .192 average (19-for-99)...Allowed multiple runs in just 2 of his 22 outings.

2020

Did not pitch competitively in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and did not appear on the club's 60-man player pool at their Alternate Training Site.

2019

Underwent Tommy John surgery in Sept. of 2019... prior to his surgery, began the season with Single-A Lake Elsinore, and he pitched in six games with a 6.21 ERA in 29.0 innings before landing on the 7-day Injured List on May 9... was sent to Rookie-League AZL Padres 1 and 2 for his rehab assignment on Aug.6 before reinstating him from the IL on Sept.16.

2018

Spent the entire 2018 season in Single-A Fort Wayne and started 21 of the 24 games in which he played...posted a 3.71 ERA on the season in 116.1 IP, and opponents hit .276.

2017

In his 1st professional season in 2017, began the year with the AZL Padres for two games before being assigned to Single-A Tri-City, where he owned a 3.48 ERA (22 ER, 41.1 IP) in 11 appearances (six starts).
