Attended Carmel Catholic High School (Mundelein, IL) and Texas Christian University...in three seasons at TCU (2013-15) went 17-10, 2.39 in 20 starts and 41 relief appearances...as a junior in 2015 was first team All-Big 12 and Louisville Slugger All-America second team after finishing 9-3, 2.22...was Texas Christian's starting pitcher in the 2015 NCAA Super Regional vs Texas A&M and was drafted later that day by the Diamondbacks...in that start allowed just one run with 10 strikeouts in 6.0 innings in leading TCU to the College World Series with a 16-inning, 5-4 walk-off win...was a 2012 graduate of Carmel Catholic High School...his father, Erik, from 1986-1989 was a four-year starter and letterman for Baldwin-Wallace College and produced a .381 career batting average and 51 stolen bases...Erik was drafted by the Indians in 1988 and again in 1989, signing in 1989, and in 2005 was inducted into the Baldwin-Wallace Hall of Fame...the family moved to the Chicago area when Alex was a child.

On 1/17/23 was signed by the Reds to a Minor League contract and invited to Major League spring training camp...Was one of three non-roster invitees to make the Reds' Opening Day roster (RHP Derek Law, IF/OF Jason Vosler)…Made his third Opening Day roster (2020, 2021 Diamondbacks)…In the 10-inning, 9-7 win on 6/18 at Hou recorded his only Major League save...On 8/6 vs Wsh left his appearance with back spasms...posted a 7.11 ERA in 6 more appearances (6.1ip, 5h, 5er, 3bb, 5k, 2hr, .217baa) until he went on the injured list on 8/26 with left hamstring tightness...On 9/6 and 9/15 made two rehabilitation appearances for Louisville...three days after his rehab appearance on 9/6 was transferred to the Reds' COVID-19 IL...12 times threw more than 1.0 inning, last on 8/15 vs Cle (2ip) and including a season-high 2.0 innings twice (4/13 vs Phi, 8/15 vs Cle)…Retired the first batter in 39 of his 63 appearances...inherited 46 base runners, 16 scored...inherited the bases loaded twice, on 6/6 vs LAD (Freddie Freeman grand slam) and on 6/19 vs Col (stranded two runners)…12 times pitched on two consecutive days, including each of the last two days of the season, and once pitched on a career-high three straight days (6/18-6/20)...in those three straight appearances earned the first save of his Major League career and his first two wins of the season...Was one of five Reds pitchers to pitch three straight days (Daniel Duarte twice, Lucas Sims twice, Fernando Cruz, Ian Gibaut)…From 6/19-6/23, for the third time in his career earned the win in three consecutive appearances...did it twice in his 2019 rookie season, when he finished 7-5...Ha-Seong Kim's home run on 5/1 at SD was the first allowed by Young since 9/7/21 for Cle vs Min (Brent Rooker), snapping Young's homerless streak at 41.2 innings covering 38 games over three seasons...Didn't allow a walk over 10 appearances from 5/7-5/30 (7.2ip, 7k)…On 5/27 at Chc recorded the 200th strikeout of his career (Christopher Morel)…In the fifth inning on 4/3 vs Cubs made his 100th Major League appearance...was credited with the 7-6 win by the official scorer, but after post-game review Major League Baseball awarded the win to Fernando Cruz...Was charged with one pitch timer violation (5/10 vs NYM, Francisco Lindor batting)…His ejection by HP umpire Carlos Torres on 6/6 vs LAD was the first of his career...in that appearance was charged with three walks, a career high in relief and allowed a grand slam to Freddie Freeman.

2022

In one start and 24 relief appearances for the Diamondbacks and Indians combined to finish 1-1, 2.36... In 33 relief appearances for their Class AAA affiliates in Columbus and Sacramento went 3-0, 3.34 with one save in two save chances... Was a non-roster invitee to the Indians' Major League Spring Training camp... On 7/14 was designated for assignment... On 7/18 was traded to the Giants for cash considerations... Following the season elected free agency... On 1/17/23 was signed by the Reds to a minor league contract and invited to Major League Spring Training camp.

2021

Young was claimed on July 26 and optioned to AAA Columbus upon being designated for assignment by Arizona on July 21...Posted a 2-6 mark with a 6.26 ERA (29ER/41.2) across 30 appearances/two starts over two stints for the Diamondbacks in 2021 before the DFA, yielding 11 homers in 41.2 innings after allowing 11 homers in 46.1 IP in 2020...Made the Arizona Opening Day roster for the second straight season, was first optioned on June 29, recalled again from July 9-19 and optioned and later DFA'd on July 20... Was recalled to Cleveland on August 12 after five relief outings in AAA Columbus (4ER/5.2IP, 6.35 ERA)…Made 10 relief outings with Cleveland, posting a 7.84 ERA over those outings (club was 1-9 in games in which he pitched)…Recorded only hold with club on Aug. 27 vs. Boston (*four overall on year)…Was designated for assignment on Nov. 19 and outrighted to AAA Columbus five days later after going unclaimed.

2020

Was 2-4 with 1 hold and a 5.44 ERA (28 ER in 46.1 IP) in 15 games (7 starts) in his second season with the D-backs...Went 2-0 with a 4.20 ERA (7 ER in 15.0 IP) as a reliever and 0-4 with a 6.03 ERA (21 ER in 31.1 IP) as a starter...Allowed three earned runs or fewer in six of seven starts…Four of his eight relief appearances were at least 2.0 innings. ..Earned the win with 5.1 innings of relief on Sept. 11 vs. Mariners (2 ER).

2019

Went 7-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 17 games (15 starts) in his first Major League season...Among all rookie pitchers (min. 15 starts), ranked fourth in opponent average (.229) and fi fth in ERA and WHIP (1.19).

2018

Combined to go 10-5 with a 5.17 ERA and 109 strikeouts in 29 games (21 starts) with Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Reno...Was 7-1 with a 3.75 ERA (26 ER in 62.1 IP) in his first 11 starts...Made his final eight appearances out of the bullpen (6 ER in 10.2 IP).
