Posted a 15-8 record with a 4.15 ERA (85er, 184.1ip) and one complete game in 32 starts, his best campaign in a Giants uniform. His 15 wins were the most he's ever had with the Giants and the most he's had in a campaign since winning 16 games with the A's in 2006. The Giants went 21-11 (.656) in his starts, matching Matt Cain for the most club victories in his starts. The Giants won his last 11 outings of the season...the last time SF won 11-consecutive starts by one of their pitchers was when they won 11-straight when Bill Swift started from April 6-June 27, 1992 (STATS, LLC). Went 7-0 with a 3.92 ERA (27er, 62.0ip) in his last 11 starts of the season...the Giants last lost a Zito start on Aug. 2 vs. New York-NL. Finished the season with a seven-game win streak which marked his longest win streak in a Giants uniform and his longest since an eight-game win streak from June 28-Aug. 4, 2005 (with Oakland). Received an average of 5.96 runs of support in his starts, the highest average on the Giants' staff and the third highest figure in the NL. Had injury plagued season for 1st time in his career and spent most of season either on disabled list or in minors ... Went 3-4 with 5.87 ERA (35er, 53.2ip) in 13 games (9 starts) at Major League level, his fewest games he's ever appeared in big leagues ... Night before Opening Day was in two-car wreck in West Hollywood, traveling through an intersection on Sunset Blvd., when taxi ran light while trying to make left turn... was examined by head and neck specialist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and X-rays came back negative ... Pitching 4 days after his violent collision, Zito showed little effects of whiplash, allowing just 3 runs on 3 hits through 6.0 innings in his 1st start of season on April 3 at Los Angeles-NL...did not receive decision ... 2 starts later on April 16 at Arizona, left in 2nd inning after fielding pop out bunt from pitcher Joe Saunders...made one pitch after that and after team athletic trainer Dave Groeschner examined him, he was removed from game... was later diagnosed with right mid foot sprain (X-rays came back negative), that placed him on 15-day disabled list next day...his 12-year career streak of never missing start due to injury came to an end as he made his 1st-ever appearance on disabled list ... Traveled back to San Francisco following series with D-Backs to have ankle examined by team doctors...X-rays ruled out fracture, but had to wear immobilization boot for two weeks ... After strong start to season, Zito struggled down stretch, finishing campaign with 9-14 record and 4.15 ERA (92er, 199.1ip) in 34 games (33 starts) ... Did not reach double-digit win plateau for 1st time since his rookie season in 2000...snapped 9-straight years of 10-plus victories per season ... Had 19 quality starts, his most in one season since 2006 with Oakland (20) ... Giants won 15 of his 1st 24 starts, however club won just once in his final 9 starts ... without recording complete game, which according to Elias Sports Bureau, was 2nd-longest streak in major league history, behind former Giant Kirk Rueter (193-straight starts without CG from 1999 to end of his career in 2005)...dropped season-high 4-consecutive starts May 13-30, going 0-4 with 4.61 ERA (14er, 27.1ip)...once again, did not receive whole lot of run support, receiving 6 total runs (1.98 avg.)...snapped losing streak with 2nd victory of year June 5 at Florida in SF's 2-1 win...pitched one of his best games of year June 21 vs. Texas in SF's 3-2 victory at AT&T Park...took no-hitter into 7th inning before allowing 2-run HR to Andruw Jones on 1st pitch (his 2nd batter faced in inning)...marked 4th time in his career to have no-hitter through 6.0 innings, and 2 of his previous 3 were also against Rangers, on Aug. 25, 2006 (through 7.0 innings) and July 15, 2005 (through 6.0)...only other time was in 2002 against Mariners (Elias)...pitched 8.1-scoreless innings in Giants' 3-0 win over Marlins in San Francisco July 7...according to Elias, between his major-league debut in 2000 and end of 2004 season, Zito threw 8.0+ innings without allowing run 11 times, 7th-highest total in majors...however, this was only his 2nd such game since 2005 (other: Aug. 23, 2008 vs. SD)...in his final start before All-Star break, allowed season-high 10 hits and 9 runs July 12 vs. San Diego...entered break with 5-9 record with 5.01 ERA in 18 starts...pitched one of Giants' biggest games of year July 23 against Braves at Turner Field...Giants were coming off losses in 6 of their previous 7 games and were in danger of getting swept in 4 game series to Atlanta...Zito proceeded to give up only 3 hits in 7.0 innings as Giants beat Braves 5-1 to avoid sweep...had 3-0 record with 2.19 ERA over 4 starts from July 23-Aug. 8, which was his best 4-start span (i.e, 3-0 or better with an ERA that low) going 3-0 with 1.32 ERA over 4 starts for Oakland in May/June 2006 (Elias)...had his season-high 3-game winning streak snapped Aug. 14 at New York-NL in 1st game of an 11-game road trip, which started with 3-0 Giants loss...allowed leadoff homer to Angel Pagan, marking just 4th time to allow regular season leadoff HR (Ichiro, 3x, Derek Jeter, twice and Rafael Furcal)...had 3-start stretch from Aug. 19-29 in which he did not allow an earned run for 20.0-consecutive innings, his longest such streak since 23.0-inning stint from Aug. 29-Sept. 15, 2000...went 1-0 with 0.44 ERA (1er, 20.1ip) and .188 avg. against (13-for-69) in those 3 starts...streak of not allowing an earned run was snapped Aug. 29 vs. Colorado after allowing 1-out solo home run to Brad Hawpe in 9th inning...was on his way to pitching his 5th career complete-game shutout before giving up that homer...finished month of August with 1.93 ERA (8er, 37.1ip), his lowest figure in single month since fashioning 1.32 mark in May of 2006...received season-high 10 runs of support Sept. 15 vs. Colorado in Giants' 10-2 victory...was just 2nd time in his last 3 seasons to be supported with that many runs (also 11 runs, Sept. 30, 2007 at LAD)...struck out 9 batters in his win over Rockies, including 3 K's against Todd Helton becoming 1 of only 3 pitchers to fan Helton that many times in game (also Darren Dreifort - June 13, 1998 and Dontrelle Willis - May 6, 2005)...finished season going 0-1 with 5.27 ERA (8er, 13.2ip) in his final 3 starts...

Giants Opening Day starter (2nd straight year) lost career-high 17 decisions, most losses by Giants pitcher since Dave LaPoint went 7-17 in 1985...was 1 loss shy of matching SF's record for losses in season, set by Ray Sadecki in 1968 with 18...overall, went 10-17 with 5.15 ERA (103er, 180.0ip) in 32 games (all starts) for San Francisco...recorded double-digit win totals for 8th straight season, while also reaching 30-start plateau for 8thstraight year, 1 of just 5 pitchers to accomplish that feat in each of last 8 seasons...Warren Spahn (1947-63) holds record with 17 straight 30-start years, while Livan Hernandez (1999- 2008) owns active streak with 10 years...set franchise mark for most losses prior to All-Star Break, with 12 defeats (1st All-Star Game was in 1933)...before '08 season, 5 different Giants had dropped 11 decisions before Break: Mike McCormick (6-11, 1968), Ron Bryant (2-11, 1974), Ed Halicki (8-11, 1976), Bill Laskey (2-11, 1985) and Livan Hernandez (6-11, 2001)...SF went 13-10 over his last 23 starts, after dropping each of his 1st 9 efforts...SF scored 2 runs or less in 19 of his 32 starts (59.3%)...in fact, owned 6th-smallest run support avg. Went 14-13 with 3.86 ERA in 35 starts...reached double-digits in victories for 5th-consecutive season, but established career high for losses...tied for AL lead in starts, while ranking 2nd in opponents batting avg. (.221), 3rd in innings pitched (228.1) and 5th in strikeouts (171)...also paced junior circuit with career-high 3,805 pitches thrown, most by Oakland hurler since Dave Stewart had 3,925 in 1991...struggled in season's opening and closing months, going 0-4 with 6.60 ERA in 5 April starts and 2-3 with 6.50 mark during 6 Sept. assignments...however, went 12-6 with 2.77 ERA and .197 avg. against in 24 starts May-August...A's scored total of 12 runs while he was pitching during his 13 losses...forged 14-2 mark (.875) in 21 starts with at least 2 runs of support...did not commit an error in 46 total chances, while ranking 6th among AL pitchers with 34 assists...made 1st career Opening Day start, taking ball April 4 at Baltimore...recorded 1st ML hit June 7 at Washington, singling off Tony Armas, Jr....won 8-consecutive starts June 28-Aug. 4, compiling 2.33 ERA and .199 avg. against...earned AL Pitcher of Month honors for July after going 6-0 with 2.51 ERA in 6 starts.
