Was 3rd on the team with 9 victories, but the fewest in his three major league seasons...Also spent 25 days with AAA Ottawa, his first trip to the minors since he was recalled for a spot start on 5/13/04...Despite missing a combined 6 1/2 weeks on the disabled list and in the minors, led the American league with 104 walks allowed...Also had 2 complete games, one of 16 AL pitchers with more than one, and was tied for 15th in the league with 157 strikeouts...Would have led the AL and finished 2nd in the majors in strikeouts/9IP with 9.55 if he had pitched enough innings to qualify (needed 14.0 more)...Minnesota's Johan Santana (9.44) topped the AL while San Diego's Jake Peavy (9.56) led the NL...Also would have led the majors in walks/9IP with 6.32 if he had qualified, ahead of AL leader Gil Meche (4.05) of Seattle and the Chicago Cubs' Carlos Zambrano (4.84), the NL leader...If he had enough innings to qualify, would have been the highest ratio in the majors since Oakland's Todd Van Poppel (6.87) in 1994...Led the majors with 17 wild pitches, including a club-record 4 on June 25 vs. Washington...In his final start of the season on September 28 at New York, took a no-hitter into the 9th inning before the Yankees' Robinson Cano's one-out single ended his no-hit bid...Settled for a one-hit, 7-1 victory, allowing 2 walks with 5 strikeouts...Was two outs shy of becoming the first individual pitcher to throw a no-hitter against the Yankees since the Orioles' Hoyt Wilhelm did it on September 20, 1958...Became the 21st pitcher to throw a complete-game one-hitter against the Yanks since Wilhelm's 1958 no-hitter...Walked 50 batters over his first 10 starts, the most since Tim Wakefield had 51 through 10 starts in 1993, and the most in so few innings (52.1) over 10 starts since Bobby Witt walked 53 in 50.0 IP in 1986, according to Elias Sports Bureau...Issued 7 bases on balls in his first start of the season on April 7 vs. Boston, setting a club record with 6 walks in the first inning...Walked a career-high 9 batters and struck out 10 in 5.0 IP in his 2nd outing on April 12 at Tampa Bay...Became the first pitcher with 9 or more walks and strikeouts in the same game since Pittsburgh's Tim Wakefield accomplished the feat in 10 innings on Opening Day 1993...Joined Steve Barber as the only Orioles pitchers to have 9 walks and strikeouts in the same outing...Barber had 11 walks and strikeouts in 11 innings on 8/13/61 vs. Boston...According to Elias, he is the only pitcher in the last 40 years to pitch 5.0 ininngs or less and have at least 9 walks and strikeouts in the same game...Walked 7 batters in back-to-back outings, May 9 vs. Detroit and May 14 vs. Kansas City, getting nodecisions in both starts...Was placed on the disabled list with right shoulder inflamation after his start on May 14...After being activated from the DL on June 5, won his first two starts, pitching 11.0 scoreless innings while striking out 14 and walking 11...Went 0-5 with a 7.02 ERA (33.1IP, 26ER) over his next 6 starts, June 15-July 13...Walked at least 5 batters in 11 of his first 16 starts, including 5 walks in 5.1 innings in a 15-1 loss on July 13 vs. Texas to open the 2nd half...Was optioned to AAA Ottawa the next day. wAt the time, was 4-7 with a 5.25 ERA (85.2IP, 50ER) in 16 starts, with 75 walks and 90 strikeouts...Won the last 3 of his 4 starts at Ottawa...Pitched 6.0 scoreless innings in his last start on August 3 vs. Scranton-Wilkes Barre, walking one and striking out 8 batters...Was recalled from Ottawa on August 8 and went 5-3 with a 4.04 ERA in his last 10 starts (62.1IP, 28ER)...Struck out 67 batters and walked 29. wPitched his second career shutout on August 19 vs. Toronto...Matched his season-high with 10 strikeouts and walked only one batter...Followed the shutout with 7.0 scoreless innings for a win in his next start on August 25 vs. Tampa Bay, running his scoreless innings streak to 16.0...Was winless in his next 4 starts, however, going 0-2 with a 7.78 ERA (19.2IP, 17ER) and pitching into the 6th inning only once...Walked 3 batters or less in 5 of 16 starts before being sent to Ottawa but walked 3 or less in 7 of 10 starts after returning from the minors...Represented his native Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic in March, going 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA (7.1IP, 3H, 1ER) in 2 starts...After earning the win vs. Australia on March 10, pitched 4.0 hitless innings and struck out 7 vs. Venezuela on March 14 as his team advanced to the WBC semifinals.

Showed signs of dominance during an inconsistent season but finished strong with a 2.40 ERA in his final five starts. Cabrera led the Orioles in strikeouts with 157. His most outstanding outing this season was an 11-strikeout performance on May 9 against Minnesota.
2004
Finished third in American League Rookie of the Year voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America after leading Major League rookies in wins (12), starts (27) and innings pitched (147.2) and finishing 7th in strikeouts (76). Was named to Topps and Baseball Digest Major League All-Star Rookie teams. Was recalled from AA Bowie for a spot start in mid-May and remained in the starting rotation for the rest of the season. Was 9-5 with a 3.71 ERA through August 10, but went 3-3 with a 9.00 ERA (36.0IP, 36ER) in his last 9 starts. Tied for 3rd among AL pitchers with 89 walks...Averaged 5.42 BB/9IP, nearly one more than Jose Contreras (4.44), the league's highest qualifier (162.0IP). Would have ranked 14th in the AL with only 8.84 hits/9IP, but fell 14.1 innings shy of qualifying. Had 12 "Quality Starts" (6 or more IP, 3 or fewer ER allowed) and allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 15 of his 27 starts...Allowed only 4 homers in his first 11 outings, spanning 64.0 innings, but gave up 10 homers in his last 17 starts (83.2IP) beginning July 5. Began the season at Bowie before being recalled by the Orioles for a spot start in the first game of doubleheader on May 13 at Chicago...Allowed 2 hits in 6.0 scoreless innings to earn the victory as the Orioles beat the White Sox, 1-0. Became the first O's pitcher to win his major league debut since Rocky Coppinger on 6/11/96...Remained in the rotation and won 3 of his first 4 major league decisions. Won his 2nd start on May 18 at Seattle, working 6.2 innings to defeat the Mariners, 7-2, to join Coppinger (1996) and Scott Klingenbeck (1994-1995) as the only Orioles to win their first two big league starts...String ended when he lost his 3rd start at Anaheim on May 23.

Was 5th among Orioles minor leaguers with 120 strikeouts for Class A Delmarva ... Struck out a seasonhigh 9 batters on 3 occasions, and also struck out 8 batters 3 times ... Led South Atlantic League pitchers with 78 walks, tied for 5th among all minor league pitchers ... Lost his first 7 decisions and was winless until his 17th start on July 12 ... Hurled a 3-hit, 7-inning complete game in the opener of a doubleheader on April 18 at Lexington but lost, 3-1 ... Allowed 4 hits and one run and struck out 8 batters in 6.0 innings on June 26 vs. Greensboro, but did not get a decision ... Broke a 7-game losing streak with a 6-2 win on July 12 at Lakewood ... Allowed one earned run on 3 hits over 5.0 IP ... Also won his next outing on July 17 at Hagerstown, allowing 3 runs over 6.0 innings ... Allowed one earned run in 17.0 IP over 3 consecutive starts, August 8-20, going 2-0 ... Pitched 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and one walk, in 9-0 win over Capital City on August 8 ... Struck out 9 batters, including 4 in a row, to begin a string over which he retired 12 straight batters ... Won his 2nd consecutive start on August 15 vs. Charleston-WV, allowing a run and 4 hits over 6.0 IP in a 3-2 win ... Did not get a decision on August 20 vs. Lexington despite allowing only 2 unearned runs on 3 hits ... Allowed 3 earned runs or fewer over 13 straight starts, June 13 through August 20, going 4-2 with a 3.07 ERA (67.1IP, 23ER) ... Allowed 2 runs or fewer over his last 5 starts in that stretch ... After allowing 7 runs (6 earned) in 1.1 inning in a start on August 26 at Lexington, came back to win his final outing of the year on August 31 with 6.0 innings of 3-hit ball, allowing one unearned run at Charleston-WV ... Opponents batted just .225 off him (105-467).

Led Rookie-level Bluefield staff with 69 strikeouts in 60.1 IP and tied for the team lead with 5 wins and 12 starts ... Ranked 11th in Appalachian League with 3.28 ERA ... Had ratio of 10.29 K/9 IP, 4th among Appy League starters.
