Showed signs of dominance during an inconsistent season but finished strong with a 2.40 ERA in his final five starts. Cabrera led the Orioles in strikeouts with 157. His most outstanding outing this season was an 11-strikeout performance on May 9 against Minnesota.

Finished third in American League Rookie of the Year voting by the Baseball Writers Association of America after leading Major League rookies in wins (12), starts (27) and innings pitched (147.2) and finishing 7th in strikeouts (76). Was named to Topps and Baseball Digest Major League All-Star Rookie teams. Was recalled from AA Bowie for a spot start in mid-May and remained in the starting rotation for the rest of the season. Was 9-5 with a 3.71 ERA through August 10, but went 3-3 with a 9.00 ERA (36.0IP, 36ER) in his last 9 starts. Tied for 3rd among AL pitchers with 89 walks...Averaged 5.42 BB/9IP, nearly one more than Jose Contreras (4.44), the league's highest qualifier (162.0IP). Would have ranked 14th in the AL with only 8.84 hits/9IP, but fell 14.1 innings shy of qualifying. Had 12 "Quality Starts" (6 or more IP, 3 or fewer ER allowed) and allowed 2 earned runs or fewer in 15 of his 27 starts...Allowed only 4 homers in his first 11 outings, spanning 64.0 innings, but gave up 10 homers in his last 17 starts (83.2IP) beginning July 5. Began the season at Bowie before being recalled by the Orioles for a spot start in the first game of doubleheader on May 13 at Chicago...Allowed 2 hits in 6.0 scoreless innings to earn the victory as the Orioles beat the White Sox, 1-0. Became the first O's pitcher to win his major league debut since Rocky Coppinger on 6/11/96...Remained in the rotation and won 3 of his first 4 major league decisions. Won his 2nd start on May 18 at Seattle, working 6.2 innings to defeat the Mariners, 7-2, to join Coppinger (1996) and Scott Klingenbeck (1994-1995) as the only Orioles to win their first two big league starts...String ended when he lost his 3rd start at Anaheim on May 23.
