In 1993 graduated from Bellefonte (PA) High School, where he played baseball and basketball...attended the University of Maryland, where in 1996 he was a pre-season All-American...in 1996 threw a no-hitter for Falmouth in the Cape Cod League...actively supports the American Diabetes Association and Garth Brooks' Teammates For Kids Foundation.
2006
In a season interrupted by a pair of surgeries ranked third on the pitching staff - behind Bronson Arroyo and Aaron Harang - in starts (26), innings pitched (152.2) and strikeouts (90)...on 9/22 had season-ending surgery to clean out his left elbow (Dr. Timothy Kremchek)...left his start on 9/12 vs SD after 5.0 innings with stiffness in his left elbow...the next day received a cortisone shot but started as scheduled on 9/17 at Chi...in that 11-3 loss to the Cubs faced only 7 batters in the shortest start of his career (0.1ip, 6h, 6er, 0bb, 1k, Jones 3-run HR, Cedeno 2-run HR), raising overall ERA from 4.84 to season-ending 5.19... didn't pitch again the rest of the season...began the season 2-1, 6.50 with 2 quality apps in 3 starts before he went on the 15-day disabled list with the left knee injury...on 4/24 had arthroscopic surgery to clean up the meniscus in that knee (Kremchek)...returned on 5/20 and in his last 26 starts of the season went 6-7, 5.01 with 12 quality apps...in his 26 starts the Reds went 12-14 and scored 134 runs (5.16 r/g)...from 5/20-6/11 pitched 30.0 innings without issuing a walk...in his season debut on 4/7 vs Pit earned the 7-6 victory and recorded the 1,000th strikeout of his career (Jason Bay)...was his first strikeout of the season...in the 12-6 loss on 4/18 vs Fla allowed a career-high 9 runs...6 days later had the knee surgery...on 6/6 at StL, in one of his best outings of the season threw 7.0 shutout innings to earn the 7-0 victory (5h, 0bb, 3k)...on 7/28 at Mil made his 250th career start and earned the 4-3 victory (7ip, 5h, 3er, 2bb, 3k)...didn't allow an earned run in a 2-1 loss at SD on 9/3 (6ip, 5h, 1r, 0bb, 2k), but because of an off day was skipped in the rotation...didn't pitch again until 9/12, when he was a victim of a blown save in the 11-inning, 5-4 Reds win...in that start was bothered by the elbow injury...as a hitter, from 8/8-8/19 had a 4-game hitting streak (4-8, .500) that included a pinch-hit single in the 12th inning on 8/11 at Phi (off Geoff Geary)...was the longest hitting streak by a Reds pitcher all season...his pinch hit was the first by a Reds pitcher since Paul Moskau singled on 10/1/78 vs the Braves...in spring training was bothered by a sore right calf muscle.
2005
Led the pitching staff with 34 starts, tying his career high...produced 13 quality starts, including QS in each of his last 2 apps, in 3 of his last 4 apps and in 5 of his last 8 apps...had his best month in August (5gs, 2-1, 4.40)...led the Major Leagues with a club-record 40 home runs allowed...became the first Reds pitcher to lead the National League and the majors in home runs allowed since Tom Browning did it in 1988, 1989 and 1991...in his last 2 starts of the season posted a 1.93era (14ip, 3er)...in his 34 starts the Reds went 14-19-1, including a tie game on 6/30 vs Hou, and scored 170 runs (5 r/g)...twice was the victim of blown saves...in the 10-9 loss on 5/2 vs StL was the victim of a blown save when the Cardinals scored 7 runs in the top of the ninth...was StL's biggest ninth-inning comeback ever and the Reds' worst ninth inning since 1952...twice threw a season-high 8.0 innings (5/23 vs Wsh, 8/ 27 at Pit)...in his 5-3 victory vs the Nationals on 5/23 became the first Reds lefthander to throw at least 8.0 innings in a game since Lance Davis' complete game in a 9-1 win on 7/16/01 vs Det...in the 5-2 loss at Hou on 4/19 made his fourth career start on 3 days' rest (4.1ip, 8h, 5er, 1bb, 2k, 3hr)...in the 9-7 loss on 9/18 at Pit received no decision in the shortest start of his career (0.2ip, 6h, 6er, 2bb, 0k)...on 9/2 at Atl allowed his 37th homer of the season (solo by Andruw Jones), a new club record previously held by Browning (36hr, 1988)...as a batter hit his first 2 career home runs (5/8 vs LA off Jeff Weaver, 7/26 at LA off Odalis Perez)...on 5/18 at NYM produced his fourth career 2-hit game, then on 5/23 vs Wsh had another 2-hit game...became the first Reds pitcher with consecutive multi-hit games since Browning did it in April 1991.
2004
In his first season in the National League led the Phillies in victories (14), starts (34), innings pitched (201.0) and strikeouts (161)...the club went 20-14 in his starts, including 16-5 in his first 21 apps...ranked sixth in the NL with a .700 winning percentage...led the NL and ranked second in the Major Leagues with 43 homers allowed, the second-highest total in Phillies history (Robin Roberts, 46hr, 1956)...25 of the 43hr were solo shots...began the season 5-0, 9-1 and 13-2...became the first Phillies pitcher to 13 of his first 15 decisions since Steve Carlton in 1980...in 10 starts from 7/9-8/25 went 2-0 with 8 no-decisions...on 7/25 vs Chi took a no-hitter into the ninth inning, but Michael Barrett began the inning with a bloop double...in that 3-2 victory recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts but received no decision (8.2ip, 3h, 2er, 1bb, 12k)...as a hitter, tied his career high with 2 hits on 7/4 vs Atl...on 9/17 vs Mtl recorded the first double of his career.
2003
Spent most of the season on the 60-day disabled list while recovering from surgery to repair the torn lateral meniscus in his left knee...before he was activated on 9/12 made 1 rehab appearance at Class A Ft. Myers and another for Class AA New Britain in Game 1 of the Eastern League playoffs...from 9/14-9/26 went 1-0, 2.65 in his 3 starts for the Twins...earned his only victory of the season in a 6-2 win on 9/19 vs Det by throwing 7.0 shutout innings...made 1 relief appearance during the American League Division Series vs NYY, received no decision in the 8-1 loss at Min in Game 4.
2002
Ranked third in the American League for fewest walks per 9 innings (1.6)...threw at least 6.0 innings in 19 of his 29 starts...produced 16 quality starts...from 8/7-9/1 was on the disabled list following surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee...went 13-7, 4.60 in 24 starts prior to the surgery and 0-2, 6.64 in 5 starts after the surgery...in his last 2 starts of the season allowed just 1er in 11.2ip (0.77era)...in the 6-0 victory vs WSox on 8/1 threw his fourth career shutout and had a season-high 11 strikeouts...as a hitter, on 6/15 at Mil recorded his second career 2-hit game...earned the 11-2 victory vs the Athletics in Game 4 of the American League Division Series...received no decision in the 2-1 loss at Ana in Game 3 of the AL Championship Series.
