Was recalled from rehab and reinstated from 15-day disabled list on May 14. Made debut on May 16 vs. Cincinnati, starting at catcher. Had a streak of five straight games with two-plus RBI from June 26-July 3. Tied with Hanley Ramirez (June 21-26, 2009) for longest such streak in Club history, and tied Miguel Cabrera (May 19-24) for longest streak in MLB in 2013. Hit fourth walk-off grand slam in Club history on June 30 vs. San Diego, joining Giancarlo Stanton (May 13, 2012 vs. Mets), Dan Uggla (June 11, 2008 vs. Phillies) and Bobby Bonilla (September 16, 1997 vs. Rockies). It was first career walk-off home run for Mathis, and second career GS. Was also the 3,000th home run in Marlins' history, in the Franchise's 3,252nd game (third-fastest team to 3,000 home runs). The projected heir-apparent to Bengie Molina lasted only a month with the Angels in 2006. After batting .108 in 11 games in April, Mathis was sent down to Triple-A Salt Lake to regain his confidence at the plate and behind it. He was recalled in September and finished the year with a .145 average, two home runs and six RBIs. Mathis hit .289 in 99 games with the Bees and was named the organization's defensive player of the year for the third time.
2005
