Mateo was 9-4 with a 4.19 ERA in 48 games before his season came to an end on Aug. 28, when he was placed on the disabled list with a broken bone in his right hand. Mateo was leading all Major League relievers with his career-best nine victories at the time of his injury. Mateo pitched well in the second half of the season, posting a 2.45 ERA in 20 appearances after the All-Star break.

Set club record for most wins to start a career, 5-0, was 0-0 in 2002, 4-0 in 2003 and recorded fifth win June 26...on 15-day disabled list July 29-Sept. 15 with tendinitis in right elbow...appeared in 40 games before going on DL, 1-2 with one save, 5.05 ERA, 40 strikeouts and 14 walks in 51.2 IP...after returning from DL had a 1.50 ERA in five games (6.0 IP, 1 ER)...was 2-0, 2.84 in six games with Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.

Named the Mariners Unsung Hero for 2003 by the Seattle chapter of the BBWAA... spent first full season in the Majors...walked 13 while striking out 71 batters on the season, and stranded 20 of 29 inherited runners...was 2-0, 2.70 (43.1 IP, 13 ER) in 27 road games, and 2-0 3.61 (42.1 IP, 17 ER) in 23 home games...earned first ML victory June 5 at Philadelphia, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings (H, 2 K)...optioned to Tacoma June 10, but recalled the next day; did not appear in a game with Tacoma...rebounded from a 6.75 ERA (13.1 IP, 10 ER) in seven May games with a 1.92 ERA (46.2 IP, 10 ER) in his next 27 games...set career-highs with 5.1 IP and eight strikeouts Aug. 1 vs. Chicago (5.1,2,1,1,1,8,HR)...earned first career save, tossing 3.0 shutout innings, in 9-3 win vs. Oakland Sept. 26.

Began season with San Antonio, going 1-0 with a 0.52 ERA in 12 relief appearances while holding opponents to a .121 batting average...selected by Seattle May 7, and made ML debut that night vs. Toronto, tossing a scoreless inning and stranding two runners... had no record and 3.93 over 9 relief appearances before he was optioned to Tacoma June 25...recalled July 6 and made two relief appearances with Seattle...optioned back to Tacoma July 14.

His 26 saves with San Bernardino was tops among Mariners minor league hurlers and second in the Cal League...his 56 relief appearances was third in the league ...tossed 17.0 consecutive shutout innings over 16 appearances from July 1-Aug. 12; struck out 23 and walked just 2 while converting 9 consecutive save opportunities during that span... pitched in 16 games with Escogido in the Dominican Winter League.
