Appeared in three games, including one start, and went 1-0 with a 4.70 ERA for the Rockies. ... Earned a win in his last appearance, when he threw three relief innings and gave up two hits, including a Josh Willingham home run, in an 8-7 victory at Fla. on 4/29. Struck out two with no walks. ... Asencio (pronounced ah-SEN-see-oh) had his contract purchased from Triple-A Colorado Springs on 4/21 and made his Rockies debut that night against the Giants, pitching 1.0 scoreless inning of relief ... Marked first major league appearance since he started on May 15, 2003, at Minnesota when he pitched for Kansas City. ... Went 0-2 with a 4.70 ERA (15.1 ip, 8 er) and 3 walks against 14 strikeouts in 3 games/starts for Colorado Springs before being called up. Entered spring camp on the Padres' 40-man roster and began the season on the 60-day disabled list while continuing to rehab from "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow the previous year...was sent on rehab assignment to Lake Elsinore (High-A) on June 7, before being activated and optioned to Triple-A Portland June 10...earned win for Lake Elsinore on June 7 at San Jose, allowing just one run in 5.0 innings in his only Cal League outing...made 3 starts for the Beavers after being optioned, taking loss in each outing at 0-3, 9.42...PCL opponents hit .409 (27-for-66)...was released July 20 and did not pitch the rest of the season...made 2 appearances for Estrellas in Dominican Winter League.

Did not pitch all season while recovering from "Tommy John" ligament replacement surgery on March 29, 2004.
2003
Went 2-1 with a 5.21 ERA (48.1 ip, 28 er) in 8 starts for Kansas City, as his season was ended early due to elbow trouble...made his season debut April 3 vs. Chicago-AL, allowing 4 runs over 5.0 innings and did not figure into the decision...notched his first win of the year April 10 at Detroit after allowing one run (none earned) on 6 hits over 5.0 innings...collected his first big league complete game May 2 at Baltimore, matching career high with 6 K's in 9.0 innings...it was the first complete game by a Royals pitcher in 2003...suffered his only loss of the season after allowing 8 earned runs in 6.0 innings in his next start May 9 vs. Baltimore...his final start of the season came May 15 at Minnesota...was placed on the 15-day disabled list May 21 due to right elbow inflammation...underwent surgery to remove a bone chip from his right elbow on June 12 in procedure performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum...transferred to the 60-day disabled list on June 15...was sent out on rehab in late August, making 3 starts for Royals' Arizona League squad and one start for Wichita to end the year.

A Rule 5 draft pick of the Royals, Asencio made his major league debut and spent the entire season with Kansas City...went 4-7 with a 5.11 ERA (123.1 ip, 70 er) in 31 games/21 starts with Kansas City...made the Royals Opening Day roster at the age of 21 after never having pitched above the High-A level...ranked T3rd among Royals starters with 21 starts, while his 8 quality starts ranked 4th on staff...made his major league debut April 6 vs. Chicago-AL and walked all 4 batters faced (16 balls/zero strikes)...pitched out of the bullpen in his first 9 appearances before getting his first ML start May 21 at Anaheim...allowed just one run on one hit over 5.1 innings, but did not figure in the decision...went 6.1 innings, allowing one run on 4 hits to earn his first big league win June 4 at Chicago-AL...became just the 3rd Domincan-born pitcher to make his first ML start under the direction of a Dominican-born manager, joining Carlos Perez (1995) and Jose Paniagua (1996) who both made their first career starts under Felipe Alou with Montreal...at 21 years, 7 months and 22 days, was the 9th-youngest pitcher to start for the Royals...went 4-7 with a 4.51 ERA in 21 starts and 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA in 10 relief appearances...went 1-0 with a 3.53 ERA (35.2 ip, 14 er) in 6 August starts...held a 2.87 ERA (58.1 ip, 17 er) on the road compared to a 6.81 ERA (70.0 ip, 53 er) at home.

Went 12-5 with a 2.84 ERA in 28 games/21 starts at High-A Clearwater...named to the Florida State League All-Star Team and finished among league leaders in ERA (T2nd), wins (2nd), innings pitched (3rd) and strikeouts (4th)...named the FSL Player of the Week for July 16-22...tossed his first career complete game shutout July 18 at Vero Beach (4-hitter)...threw another complete game in his next outing July 24 at St. Lucie (Game 1).
