Shairon Benjamin Martis (pronounced SHY-ron mar-TEES)...Is a 2004 graduate of St. Joseph High School...Started playing pro ball at 17 years of age with the San Francisco Giants...Became the 15th native of the Natherlands Antilles to appear in a Major League game, joining the likes of Andruw Jones, Jair Jurrjens, Hensley Meulens, Roger Bernadina and Sidney Ponson.

2012

Began season with Triple-A Indianapolis (Pittsburgh) after signing as a minor league free agent November 22, 2011. ... Placed on 7-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation April 17-26...transferred to Double-A Altoona April 26. ... Was outrighted by Pittsburgh and traded to Minnesota's organization in exchange for cash considerations; reported to Double-A New Britain June 26. ... Promoted to Triple-A Rochester July 18. ... Went 4-3, 5.22 (58.2 IP, 34 ER) in 10 starts for the Red Wings, tossing 7.0-plus innings in four of final seven starts. ... Named to 2013 Netherlands roster for World Baseball Classic.

2011

Spent entire season with Harrisburg (Nationals' AA) - his sixth straight season pitching in the Washington organization...Struck out season-high 10 batters on three occasions; 6/26 vs. Altoona, 7/11 at Richmond and 8/10 vs. Richmond...Went 7-4 with a 2.69 ERA (103.2ip/31er) in his final 17 starts, beginning with 6.0 scoreless innings in his win vs. Bowie on 5/28...Posted a 2.10 ERA (25.2ip/6er) in four starts during the month of June...Recorded a 1.14 ERA (31.2ip/4er) in his five starts during the month of August...Tossed a 7.0-inning no-hitter and whiffed nine batters on 8/26 at New Hampshire; was named Eastern League Pitcher-of-the-Week for his efforts...Suffered loss in last start on 9/2 vs. Akron (5.0ip/5er).

2010

Paced Triple-A Syracuse in wins (8), innings (152.0), starts (27) and strikeouts (99)...after slow start, went 7-5 with a 3.55 ERA in final 20 starts dating to May 21...in the same 20-start span, posted a 3.6/1 strikeout-to-walk ratio (76 SO/21 BB)...ranked among organization's qualified pitching leaders in wins (tied 5th, 8) and ERA (8th, 4.09)...ranked among International League leaders with 2 complete games (tied for first) and 152.0 innings (5th).

2009

Spent season's first 3 months in Washington's rotation, going 5-3 with a 5.25 ERA in 15 starts, but struggled in final 8 assignments...was optioned to Syracuse, June 28...allowed 3 runs or less in 9 of 15 starts...despite twice exiting in line for the win only to be relegated to a no-decision (April 27 at PHI, June 16 at NYY), 5 wins upon being sent to Syracuse tied for most among Nationals (John Lannan) and NL rookies (J.A. Happ)...earned win in first 5 decisions and became the first and only DC-based rookie to start 5-0 (1901-71, 2005-present)...was the first franchise pitcher to start 5-0 since both Pedro Martinez (8-0) and Jeff Juden (5-0) in '97, and the last franchise rookie to start 5-0 since Carlos Perez in '95...politely declined invitation to pitch for the Netherlands in '09 World Baseball Classic.
Game-By-Game Highlights: Went the distance for first time in career, allowing little more than a Colby Rasmus solo shot in the 6th inning, to grab the win as the Nationals topped STL, 6-1, May 2 at Nationals Park.
In Minor Leagues: Spent final 2 months of IL campaign going 4-4 with a 4.96 ERA in 13 starts with the Chiefs...notched 7 quality starts...walked 2 or less in 11 of 13 IL starts.

Was the 2nd-youngest pitcher in the big leagues...debuted on Sept. 4 at ATL at age of 21 years, 5 months, 6 days...only LAD's Clayton Kershaw (20, 2, 6) was younger in 2008...earned first big league win, September 23 vs. FLA to become the youngest franchise pitcher to earn an initial big league win since Ugueth Urbina (May 14, 1995 at NYM).

In first full season in the Nationals' chain, paced Nationals minor leaguers with 14 wins and 151.0 innings pitched.

Thanks to mid-season trade, pitched for 4 teams at 3 levels in 2 organizations, yet went 7-8 with a 3.99 ERA in 22 starts.
