After the Rays and Lee mutually agreed that the option in his contract for 2004 would not be exercised on Oct 30, 2003, Lee signed with the Yankees on March 2, 2004...Suffered a torn labrum in his left shoulder and made two trips to the disabled list...Appeared in only 7 games (4 starts) all season...Was first placed on the DL on March 29 and returned to active duty on April 17.Two weeks later (May 1) he returned to the DL and underwent season-ending surgery on May 11...The surgery was performed by Dr. Lewis Yocum.

2003

Started 141 games at first base for the Rays in 2003- 3rd most in the AL- and had the 2nd highest fielding percentage among major league first basemen just behind Chicago's Paul Konerko (.9979 to .9977). Led the Rays in walks (64) and was 2nd in on-base pct. (.348), doubles (37), home runs (19) and extra base hits (59)...His 37 doubles were a career-high... His .996 fielding % (1343 TC, 6 E) in 2002 with Philadelphia was 3rd-best among NL 1st basemen...Did not make his first error until June 18 vs. CWS, 67th game of the season.
