The Toronto Blue Jays have agreed to terms with C Alejandro Kirk on a five-year extension ($58,000,000 USD) through the 2030 season.
Kirk, 26, was signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent out of Mexico in 2016 at the age of 17, rising through the Blue Jays system before making his MLB debut for the team in 2020 at the of age 21. In his five-year Blue Jays tenure, the right-handed hitter has been named an All-Star (2022), a Silver Slugger (2022), and a Gold Glove finalist behind the plate (2023), batting .264 with 64 doubles, a triple, 36 home runs, 187 RBI, and a .735 OPS in 434 total games. Since 2022, Kirk leads all catchers in the Majors in defensive runs saved (39) while also amassing 25 catcher framing runs. Over the last three seasons, Kirk ranks 2nd among AL catchers (min. 750 PA) in average (.265), 2nd in on-base percentage (.345), 3rd in runners caught stealing (54), and 5th in doubles (54). In 2024, the backstop from Tijuana, Mexico, threw out a career-high 25 attempted base stealers, tied for the 2nd-most catcher caught stealing in the Majors and the most by a Blue Jay since Russell Martin in 2015.
