Pirates sign Tim Mayza to one-year contract
The Pittsburgh Pirates today added left-handed pitcher Tim Mayza to the 40-man roster on a one-year contract for the 2025 season.
The 33-year-old Mayza has posted a career record of 20-9 with four saves, a 3.88 ERA (301.2ip/130er) and 304 strikeouts in 367 appearances with Toronto (2017-24) and the New York Yankees (2024).
Mayza went a combined 0-2 with a 6.33 ERA (42.2ip/30er) in 50 appearances last season between Toronto and the New York Yankees.
He also posted a 2.67 ERA (155.0ip/46er) in 193 appearances between 2021-23, which was the third-lowest among all left-handed relievers with at least 120.0 innings pitched in MLB behind Josh Hader (2.45) and Matt Moore (2.57).
During the 2023 campaign, Mayza posted the third-lowest ERA (1.52) among all American League relievers behind Chris Martin (1.05) and Felix Bautista (1.48) while making a career-high 69 appearances.
Since making his big league debut in 2017, Mayza has also allowed just 25.2 percent of his inherited runners to score, which is the fifth-lowest in all of MLB (minimum 150 inherited runners).
Infielder Alika Williams has been designated for assignment to make room for Mayza on the 40-man roster.
