Arlington, Texas ¡ª The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has signed free agent left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin (#46) to a one-year Major League contract covering the 2025 season. To make room for Corbin on the 40-man roster, the club has placed right-handed pitcher Jon Gray on the 60-day Injured List (right forearm fracture).
Corbin, a 12-year MLB veteran, made 32 starts for the Washington Nationals in 2024, going 6-13 with a 5.62 ERA (109 ER/174.2 IP), a 4.41 FIP, and 139 strikeouts against 54 walks. The 35-year-old southpaw paced the Nationals in games started (170), innings pitched (946.2), and strikeouts (832) over his six-year tenure with the club (2019-24), ranking 3rd in MLB in starts during that span.
In his 342 career MLB games/324 starts across 12 seasons with Arizona (2012-13, 2015-18) and Washington (2019-24), Corbin has totaled a 103-131 record with a 4.51 ERA (949 ER/1892.1 IP) and 1729 strikeouts. His 1892.1 career innings pitched rank 3rd among MLB left-handers since 2012, trailing only Los Angeles-NL¡¯s Clayton Kershaw (2026.1 IP) and Milwaukee¡¯s Jos¨¦ Quintana (1969.2 IP), while also ranking 4th in strikeouts among lefties during that stretch. Corbin is the only pitcher in baseball to make 31-or-more starts in every full season since 2017.
A two-time National League All-Star selection (2013 and 2018 with ARI), Corbin posted a 2.87 ERA (15 ER/23.1 IP) with 36 strikeouts in 8 postseason appearances/3 starts, during Washington¡¯s 2019 World Series Championship run, including picking up the win in the Nationals¡¯ decisive World Series Game 7 victory over Houston. The left-hander also received N.L. Cy Young Award votes in back-to-back seasons from 2018-19, including a 5th-place finish in 2018 when he went 11-7 with a 3.15 ERA (85 ER/189.2 IP) and a career-high 246 strikeouts.
Originally selected in the 2nd round (80th overall) of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels out of Chipola (Fla.) College, the Clay, N.Y. native was acquired by the Diamondbacks on July 25, 2010 in a 5-player trade that sent RHP Dan Haren to the Angels. Corbin signed a six-year pact with the Nationals following the 2018 season and became a free agent last October.
Gray, 33, was struck on his right forearm by a line-drive comebacker off the bat of 1B Michael Toglia in the 4th inning of a Cactus League game on March 14 vs. Colorado. He had tossed 8.0 scoreless innings over three starts in Cactus League play this spring (5 SO, 0 BB). The right-handed pitcher, who is 74-70 with a 4.45 ERA (602 ER/1216.2 IP) in 228 career MLB games/223 starts with the Rockies (2015-21) and Rangers (2022-24), will be re-evaluated following a six-week no-throw period.
With today¡¯s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club¡¯s Major League roster, along with two players on the 60-day Injured List: RHP Jon Gray and RHP Josh Sborz.
