Twins acquire catcher Diego Cartaya from Los Angeles Dodgers

MINNEAPOLIS-ST. PAUL, MN ¨C The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have acquired catcher Diego Cartaya from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Jose Vasquez.
Cartaya, 23, split the 2024 season between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Double-A Tulsa, combining to hit .221 (76-for-344) with 16 doubles, 11 home runs, 52 RBI, 47 walks, 51 runs scored, a .323 on-base percentage and a .686 OPS in 95 games. The Maracay, Venezuela native was signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent in July 2018 and has spent five seasons in their minor league system, hitting .236 (321-for-1359) with 66 doubles, three triples, 66 home runs, 234 RBI, 181 walks, 243 runs scored, a .340 on-base percentage and a .775 OPS in 363 games.
The 6-foot-3, 219-pound backstop was ranked as the Dodgers¡¯ 16th-best prospect by MLB.com in 2024 and their number one prospect in both 2022 and ¡¯23. He was their organization¡¯s winner of the Branch Rickey Minor League Player of the Year Award in 2022, was selected to play in the 2022 SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game and was named a Dodgers MiLB.com organizational All-Star after that season.
Vasquez, 20, has played two minor league seasons for the Dominican Summer League Twins, going 5-2 with an 8.05 ERA (57.0 IP, 51 ER), 47 walks and 71 strikeouts in 22 games (9 starts).
The Twins now have 40 players on their 40-man roster: 22 pitchers, four catchers, five infielders, five outfielders and four utility players.
