FLUSHING, N.Y., January 6, 2025 ¨C The New York Mets today announced the team will retire David Wright¡¯s No. 5 and he will enter the Mets Hall of Fame in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday, July 19 presented by NewYork-Presbyterian prior to the 4:10 p.m. game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Wright will become the eighth player in franchise history to have his number retired by the Mets, joining Tom Seaver (#41), Mike Piazza (#31), Jerry Koosman (#36), Keith Hernandez (#17), Willie Mays (#24), Dwight Gooden (#16) and Darryl Strawberry (#18). In addition, the Mets have retired three other numbers, including Manager Gil Hodges (#14), Manager Casey Stengel (#37) and Jackie Robinson (#42). Wright will join Seaver as the only players to have their number retired and enter the Mets Hall of Fame on the same day.

¡°David Wright personified class on and off the field,¡± said Mets owners Steve and Alex Cohen. ¡°David is the definition of a Met. He grew up going to Mets Triple-A games in his hometown of Norfolk, VA and was drafted by the organization in 2001. His spectacular career included seven All-Star appearances, two Gold Gloves and two Silver Slugger awards before he played an emotional final game in 2018. For a generation of Mets fans, he was their Tom Seaver, so it is a fitting tribute that only David and Tom have gone into the Mets Hall of Fame and had their number retired on the same day. He continues to contribute to the organization today serving as an ambassador. Congratulations on this tremendous honor, David.¡±

Wright is the franchise leader in hits (1,777), RBI (970), runs (949), doubles (390), extra-base hits (658) and walks (762), second in games played (1,585) and home runs (242), third in batting average (.296) and fourth in stolen bases (196) and on-base percentage (.376).

Wright was selected by the Mets as the 38^th overall pick in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft out of Hickory High School (VA). He made his major league debut on July 21, 2004 vs. Montreal at Shea Stadium. In 2013, he was named the fourth captain in franchise history. Wright would play his entire career with the Mets. His farewell game was on September 29, 2018 vs. Miami.

Wright¡¯s seven All-Star appearances are tied for the second-most in team history behind Seaver¡¯s nine selections. He was a Rawlings Gold Glove winner in 2007 and 2008 and a Louisville Silver Slugger Award recipient in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, he became the third player in team history to join the 30-30 club (30 homers, 34 stolen bases).

Wright had several historic home runs during his legendary career. In 2006, Wright became the second player in franchise history to hit a home run during an All-Star Game when he blasted a solo homer at Pittsburgh¡¯s PNC Park. Wright hit the first home run by a Mets player in Citi Field history when he went deep on April 13, 2009 vs. San Diego in the ballpark¡¯s inaugural game. He also hit the first World Series home run in Citi Field¡¯s history, a two-run shot, in Game 3 of the 2015 Fall Classic.

Wright represented the United States in the 2009 and 2013 World Baseball Classic. He delivered a walk-off RBI single against Puerto Rico in 2009 and slugged a grand slam against Italy during the 2013 tournament.
