This week, Theo Epstein spoke at Yale's Class Day. But he wasn't the only MLB figure to show up at a commencement ceremony. David Ortiz also received an honorary degree from Boston University, and Dakota Gardner and Gemma Kaneko discussed the kind of fashion inspiration the day might have provided.
Dakota: There were a couple other commencement moments this season with various players or retirees. David Ortiz got a degree at Boston University, whatever, nbd.
Gemma: He didn't make a speech.
Dakota: He should have given a speech. That's another person that we know…
Gemma: … who is good at speeches.
Dakota: Very good at speeches.
Gemma: Yeah, yeah. [But] they were like, 'Too many families here.' Can't risk it.
Dakota: Yeah. It would have been worth every moment.
Gemma: He looked so cool, though, in his robe with the cap and the sunglasses.
Dakota: Of course he looked cool. David Ortiz is basically the senior when you're a freshman who you're like, "That guy is the coolest person in the world."
Gemma: Every other human being looks like a total doofus in those puffy-sleeved robes. It's like, okay, so you're an ancient wizard.
Dakota: Professor Papi!
Gemma: Professor Papi, because for him it's a fashion choice as opposed to the idea that you have to wear these giant balloon sleeves. Dude looked cool.
Dakota: He always wears very odd outfits so it definitely seemed like something he might show up to the All-Star Game in.
Gemma: That would be amazing. Can you imagine?
Dakota: What if he didn't really understand the concept of the degree and he was like, 'So I just have to wear this now, all the time?"
Gemma: I really, really want someone to show up at the All-Star Game now; I don't care who does -- someone should do this. They should wear a full professor robe and cap and sleeves. Then someone is going to be like, "Why are you wearing that?" And he'll say, "Because I'm here to school you!"
Dakota: Oooohhhhhhhhh!
Gemma: That would be so good. It should be [Francisco] Lindor.
Dakota:Chris Archer could do it.
Gemma: They could both pull it off.
