Dodgers third baseman Justin Turner was removed from Game 6 of the World Series in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday because of a positive COVID-19 test, Commissioner Rob Manfred confirmed after the Dodgers defeated the Rays, 3-1, to clinch their seventh championship.
¡°It¡¯s a bittersweet night for us,¡± Manfred said during a postgame interview on FOX. ¡°We¡¯re glad to be done. I do think it¡¯s a great accomplishment for our players to get this season completed. But obviously we¡¯re concerned when any of our players test positive. We learned during the game that Justin was positive.¡±
Turner, who was 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, was replaced at third base by Edwin R¨ªos, with the Dodgers leading, 2-1. Mookie Betts homered in the bottom of the eighth inning for the final Dodgers run.
Following the game, Turner tweeted a statement:
¡°Thanks to everyone reaching out! I feel great, no symptoms at all. Just experienced every emotion you can possibly imagine. Can¡¯t believe I couldn¡¯t be out there to celebrate with my guys! So proud of this team & unbelievably happy for the City of LA #WorldSeriesChamps¡±
Until Turner¡¯s positive test, the Dodgers had no known positive tests since the beginning of the season.
