D-backs activate Andriese, option Scott
LOS ANGELES -- Robby Scott gave the D-backs some much-needed innings Saturday night when starter Alex Young was knocked out of the loss to the Dodgers after just 3 1/3 innings.
Scott tossed 2 2/3 innings to keep the game within shouting distance, but because that workload likely left him unavailable for a couple of days, the D-backs needed to add an arm to the bullpen.
So the team optioned Scott back to Triple-A Reno and activated right-hander Matt Andriese from the injured list.
¡°In Robby¡¯s case, it¡¯s an extremely hard send down to walk through,¡± said D-backs manager Torey Lovullo, who gave Scott the news after Saturday¡¯s game. ¡°But we needed some extra coverage in the bullpen and Robby gave us everything that he could [Saturday]. Because of what he did [Saturday], we have a chance to win [Sunday]¡¯s game. That goes unnoticed in the equation, but when I explained it to him, I told him that. He understood.¡±
Andriese had been on the injured list since July 20 with a left foot contusion. The 29-year-old is 4-4 with save and a 5.91 ERA in 37 games for the D-backs this year.
Additional roster move
The D-backs released reliever Greg Holland on Sunday after designating him for assignment Aug. 7.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well. Within seven days of the transaction (it was previously 10 days), the player must either be traded, released or placed on irrevocable outright waivers.
