Here's the Padres' Spring Breakout roster

The MLB Spring Breakout returns with 16 matchups from March 13-16. After beating the Mariners 13-10 in last year’s edition, the Padres will face off against the A’s this year. Here’s what you need to know about the 2025 Padres Spring Breakout, how to watch it and which players you can expect to see.

What is Spring Breakout?

MLB Spring Breakout is a four-day event showcasing baseball’s future: the current stars of Minor League Baseball. The second edition will be held from March 13-16 at Grapefruit and Cactus League stadiums during Spring Training. Sixteen exhibition games will be played between teams comprised of each MLB organization’s top prospects, creating a new touchpoint on the baseball calendar that celebrates the sport’s budding talent.

When is the Padres' game?

The Padres will play the A’s on March 14 at 2:40 p.m. PT at the Peoria Sports Complex.

Which position players are expected to play?

Shortstop Leo De Vries (MLB Pipeline’s No. 18 prospect) and catcher Ethan Salas (No. 33) -- a pair of 18-year-olds who are San Diego’s two representatives on Pipeline’s Top 100 list -- are the headliners for the Padres. Both players are returning to the Spring Breakout, as De Vries had a hit and two walks in last year’s game and Salas recorded two walks.

The Padres signed De Vries -- the No. 2 prospect in the 2024 international class -- to a $4.2 million deal in January 2024 and saw the youngster post a .763 OPS in 93 games between Low-A Lake Elsinore and the Arizona Fall League. Similarly, Salas was the No. 1 prospect in the ‘23 class, when the Padres signed him to a $5.6 million deal. The young catcher had a .599 OPS in 113 games with High-A Fort Wayne last season.

Which pitching prospects are expected to play?

Kash Mayfield -- the Padres’ No. 3 prospect and 2024 first-round Draft pick (No. 25 overall) -- is the top pitching prospect set to appear for San Diego. Mayfield has not thrown a professional pitch for the Padres, as the club shut him down after the lefty dominated at Elk City High School in 2024 (0.16 ERA with 115 strikeouts and eight walks).

Boston Bateman (No. 5 prospect) joins Mayfield as a 2024 Draft pick and the second-best pitching prospect in the Padres' system, according to MLB Pipeline. Like Mayfield, Bateman -- a gigantic 6-foot-8 left-hander -- has yet to throw a professional pitch after being shut down following the ‘24 Draft. Other notable pitchers are Braden Nett (No. 9) and Isaiah Lowe (No. 10).

Why are certain top prospects not listed on the roster?

Two of the Padres' top prospects will not be participating in the Spring Breakout: right-hander Humberto Cruz (No. 4) and third baseman Kale Fountain (No. 8). The Padres signed Cruz as an international free agent last February out of Mexico, while Fountain was a fifth-round pick in the 2024 Draft.

Other top 30 Padres prospects not playing include outfielder Tirso Ornelas (No. 11) and right-hander pitcher Henry Baez (No. 12).
