Red Sox reinstate right-handed pitcher Liam Hendriks from 15-day injured list
BOSTON, MA¡ªThe Boston Red Sox today reinstated right-handed pitcher Liam Hendriks from the 15-Day Injured List. To make room, the club optioned right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins to Triple-A Worcester following last night¡¯s game against the Chicago White Sox.
Hendriks, 36, last pitched in a Major League game on June 9, 2023, for the White Sox before undergoing Tommy John surgery on August 2, 2023. He was named 2023 American League Comeback Player of the Year after being diagnosed with Stage 4 non-Hodgkin¡¯s lymphoma in December 2022 and undergoing eight rounds of chemotherapy and four rounds of immunotherapy before returning to the mound in May 2023. The right-hander is a two-time Mariano Rivera American League Reliever of the Year (2020-21), three-time American League All-Star (2019, ¡¯21-22), and three-time All-MLB selection (2019-21). Originally signed by the Minnesota Twins as a non-drafted free agent on February 25, 2007, the Australia native owns a 3.82 ERA (276 ER/650.0 IP) with 116 saves and 727 strikeouts in 476 career games (44 starts) with the Twins (2011-13), Kansas City Royals (2014), Toronto Blue Jays (2014-15), Oakland Athletics (2016-20), and White Sox (2021-23). He made rehab appearances for Worcester (two starts) and Double-A Portland (one game), striking out five batters in 3.0 scoreless innings.
Dobbins, 25, earned the win last night against the White Sox, tossing 6.0 innings and allowing two runs (one earned) with six strikeouts. The right-hander has allowed four runs (three earned) with 11 strikeouts in 11.0 innings over his first two career Major League starts (also Game Two on April 6 vs. St. Louis). Selected by Boston in the eighth round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the Texas native has also made two appearances this season for Worcester, tossing 6.2 innings with four strikeouts and eight runs allowed.
