DALLAS -- The sudden nature of Craig Counsell¡¯s hiring as the manager of the Cubs on Nov. 6, 2023, denied him the typical timeframe for constructing his first coaching staff in Chicago. After one season at the helm, Counsell has seen his initial group at work, and identified some areas to make adjustments.

On Monday, the Cubs announced Counsell¡¯s 2025 coaching staff, which will once again include Ryan Flaherty at the manager¡¯s side as the bench coach. The rest of the staff has undergone some changes throughout each branch of the coaching structure.

Cubs pitching coach Tommy Hottovy returns to lead the pitching group, which had undergone a few changes.

Casey Jacobson, who most recently held the role of senior pitching coordinator within the Cubs¡¯ Minor League ranks, moves up to the Major League staff to take on the assistant pitching coach role. Jacobson, in his sixth year in the organization, assumes the job vacated by Daniel Moskos¡¯ move to the Marlins for their lead pitching coach job.

"Casey Jacobson is someone who knows the Cubs very well and I think has put in his work with the Cubs," Counsell said. "And Daniel Moskos got a great opportunity. I¡¯m happy for Daniel that he got a great opportunity. And Casey was really a logical [choice]. It was only a matter of time before we felt that Casey was going to get that opportunity."

Mark Strittmatter takes over as Counsell¡¯s bullpen coach following the dismissal of Darren Holmes at the end of last season. Strittmatter joined Chicago¡¯s staff last season after Counsell¡¯s arrival, filling the role of Major League field coordinator for the group.

On the hitting side, Dustin Kelly remains aboard as the Cubs¡¯ lead hitting coach, marking his third year with this group. Juan Cabreja and John Mallee serve as assistant hitting coaches under Kelly. Jim Adduci, who was part of that tree under Kelly last season, was dismissed at the end of last season.

The Cubs will have Quintin Berry (previously a first-base coach for the Brewers, including under Counsell in Milwaukee) take over as the new third-base coach. Across the diamond, the Cubs have hired Jose Javier as their new first-base coach. Javier joins the North Siders after most recently working as a defensive coach for the Triple-A affiliate of the Yankees.

"Quintin is somebody that I've worked with," Counsell said, "and understand what he's going to bring, what he's good at, how he's going to impact our team. Jose Javier is a young coach that we did some homework on and found out really good things about him. I think he'll be a good partner for Quintin with our baserunning."

Berry and Javier replace Mike Napoli and Willie Harris, respectively, at their new posts for the Cubs. Napoli was let go at the end of last season, while Harris and the Cubs parted ways after they could not reach an agreement on a new contract.

Jonathan Mota (Major League coach, focusing on infield defense) and Alex Smith (Major League coach, data development and process) will also remain on the staff, with A.J. Lewis (played in the Rockies¡¯ system from 2021-24) joining the group as a staff assistant. Garrett Lloyd and Erick Castillo are returning as Chicago¡¯s bullpen catchers.

The Cubs also made some changes to their strength and conditioning staff, promoting Kevin Poppe (head Major League strength coach) and Mark Weisman (assistant Major League strength coach) from the Minor League side to assume the big league roles.
